About me:
I'm an astronomer, writer, skeptic, and lecturer. Extremist politics and religion are destroying science and critical thinking in the U.S., and I fight to protect them. I run the Bad Astronomy website.

I talk about Saturn's magnificent ring system in this video created with Tom Lucas.

Who I'd like to meet:
Oh, there are a few still on the list. I simply want to shake Joss Whedon's hand. Someday I'll get the chance to meet Jewel Staite (swoon).

Holy Frick! That Lindler video...can there exist anything more beautiful than we observing ourselves from such a perspective? A big hug to you, Phil, among the coolest of sky-loving folks, for spreading the word about the EPOXI animation.

Your sun does look fat. I noticed it at TAM. Maybe you need to get a diet for celestial bodies.

"Perhaps there will be babblers who claim to be judges of astronomy although completely ignorant of the subject and, badly distorting some passage of Scripture to their purpose, will dare to find fault with my undertaking and censure it. I disregard them even to the extent of despising their criticism as unfounded. For it is not unknown that Lactantius, otherwise an illustrious writer but hardly an astronomer, speaks quite childishly about the Earth's shape, when he mocks those who declared that the Earth has the form of a globe. Hence scholars need not be surprised if any such persons will likewise ridicule me. Astronomy is written for astronomers."

Nicolaus Copernicus mocked Lactantius, who was an early Christian author (ca. 240 - ca. 320), in De revolutionibus

Read Richard Tarnas' "Cosmos and Psyche" ...beautiful presentation of how modern man/science took the Cosmic Creator out of his biggest creation.

I don't know if you are still getting friend requests from one of those 2012 loons, but this "Apocalypse 2012" book was in the *science* section of Barnes and Noble. And there was a whole stack of them, all facing front like it was featured. I was so mad that I almost carried them all off to another section, but put your book in front of them as a better statement. Hope you don't mind! Probably best that I leave some feedback with the store, too...

And, yes, I am the irreverent "Richard H." of your BA blogs.

I get so tired of people not properly examining their understanding of science and/or philosophy. Both must be examined before any understanding can be found.

The difference, of course, is that science MUST have evidence to back it and be able to withstand even the slightest attack. Whereas philosophy must only withstand logical attacks.

Yes, not all viewpoints are equal, no matter how much bitching is involved: if your argument is not logical, then it is not valid. Even philosophy has its limits.

In case someone brings up the "science can't explain it all" claptrap, may I introduce them to coprolite, aka, fossilized crap:

I really liked your vaccine blog. My friends daughter is autistic. I had him read it. He was swept up in the vaccine witch burning, but he is starting to come around to reason now.

Thank you for the vaccine blog! My sister - who I think is one smart cookie - was spouting that nonsense this past weekend. I just sent an email directing her to your blog.
Thanks for speaking out for science!

PS: There's an "intersection of Church and State" in Redlands, California, too.

I wonder how common they are.
