Influences
The Bahamian music and dance tradition of Junkanoo, which traces back to the slavery days when slaves were allowed to gather together one day a week for festivities, is fused with the modern influences of dance rhythms, pop music and Latin percussion.
The Baha Men formed the group High Voltage in 1979, but they changed their name to the Baha Men after encountering another band with the same name.
We began with the debut of our album called "Junkanoo", which was released in 1979. We are a pop group that plays a more updated version of Bahamian folk music called "Junkanoo".The Baha Men specialize in a mixture of pop, funk, and Bahamian junkanoo music. Junkanoo blends dance music with the rhythms of West Africa. The band's complete line-up features Rick Carey, Omerit Hield, and Marvin Prosper, the lead singers, Herschel Small and Patrick Carey, the guitarists, Colyn "Mo" Grant, Anthony "Monks" Flowers and Isaiah Taylor, the percussionists and Jeffrey Cher on keyboards.
We began to aim our music at a more mainstream audience and we have succeeded in the year 2000 with our remake of the song "Who let the dogs out?" originally made by Anslem Douglas. The Baha Men has managed to attract audiences from all over the world. Our most supportive audience has been in the United States of America. Our hit smash "Who let the dogs out?" has been featured in the "Rugrats in Paris" movie, and from then, we have gotten alot of attention from the younger audiences, who have been our most supportive groups. The Baha Men have a strong passion and love for our country and have been one of the first Bahamian bands to become successful, and international. Some of our smash hits include "Junkanoo"(1992), "Kalik"(1994), "Here we go again"(1996), "I Like What I Like"(1997), "Doong Spank"(1998), "Who Let the Dogs Out?"(2000), "2 Zero 0-0"(2001), "We Let the Dogs Out"(2001), "Move it like this"(2002), "Underwater Moonlight"(2002), and our most recent hit "Beach Baby" released in 2002.
