CHECK THIS REVIEW for our upcoming show at SODA BAR JAN 16TH By SETH COMBS FOR SIGNONSANDIEGO Made up of a who's-who of local musicians, The Bankhead Press' blend of smooth soul and R&B can be easily referenced, but few do it as well and as originally as they do. Formed in 2006 with members from various musical backgrounds, songs like the James Brown-influenced "Lay It Down" and the simultaneously funky and gorgeous "Constantly" have gotten the generally stoic S.D. crowds worked up enough to break a sweat while cutting loose on the dance floor. Sure, they might throw in a classic soul song here and there, but they’re certainly not a fly-by-night downtown cover band jacking out jams like an overplayed jukebox. Singer Rodney Hubbard's voice is as smooth as silk, but not in any overtly derivative way, and that same musical logic extends to the rest of the group. They're simply six extremely talented individuals who love to play this type of music, even if they know there might not be a huge local market for it. This is the stuff of classic first dates. You know, the kind that doesn’t end with a kiss at the door. True lovers rock. l
