  • Bio

Everything can be, nothing must be. Except being good. The Base has evolved from the biggest small band in Austria to the smallest giants of local indie rock. The new album "Tested Under Extreme Conditions" breaks new ground. Smooth, broken and effectively powerful. It is the sound of a trauma with the text of a drama. With their new album, The Base indulges in the imbalance. The opener "Born in the Devils Motel" is one of those rare songs that emerges every few years. One would be hard pressed to identify it as Austrian. What begins sounding like a big Hollywood movie develops in four and a half minutes into the tattered art-house Western. Instead of greasy fingers on electric guitar, it sounds like hard manual labor. The ear is jolted awake by the analog rather than the digital. The colors muted, the tempo relaxed: Norbert Wally (guitar, vocals), Albrecht Klinger (bass) and Karl Heinz Miklin Jr. (drums) exchange big riffs for reduced, wonderful melodies far from the beaten path. The songs sound as if they have left their youth behind. The sound of Lady Music, after she's grown old. Fallen, slower and sadly reminiscing. But she tells stories that, in their attention to detail, provide the evidence of eternal youth. Everything creaks and grinds on this record in a canyon of destruction. Where once were the blazing colors of summer, a melancholy shadow falls. What remains is a simplicity that truly suits The Base. "Waterproof Eyes" is reminiscent of an aging diva, still beautiful under faded lipstick. Instead of strings, "Tested Under Extreme Conditions" mixes mandolins and musical saws under the guitars, creating a spine-tingling atmosphere that does not let go. The songs live in the space between the instruments, and in the space projected in the mind of the listener. Credit the harsh and deep voice of Norbert Wally, which cuts like a rusty ax through the songs. The single "Blame It On The Moondog" pays homage to The Base's traditional rich full sound, which deservedly makes a guest appearance. And "Everything's Weird Today" pushes the tempo and re-emerges as a drunken rowdy slowly realizing that beauty is fleeting. What remains is only the oblique, the unpredictable, the corners and edges. Melancholy to snuggle up to. "Tested Under Extreme Conditions" is not perfect. Perhaps it once was, but The Base discovers miracles in the destruction of their art. Rarely do we see such beauty in the broken.
