Bathtub gin refers to any style of homemade spirit made in amateur conditions. It first appeared in the prohibition-era United States in reference to the poor-quality alcohol that was being made.
As gin was the predominant drink in the Roaring 20's, many variations were created by mixing cheap grain alcohol with water and flavorings and other agents, such as juniper berry juice and glycerin. Contrary to popular belief, the spirit was not made in a bathtub. Rather, because the preferred sort of bottle was too tall to be topped off with water from a sink, they were filled from a bathtub tap.
Many other cocktails owe their life to Bathtub gin, as they were also created in order to hide the awful taste.

Sat when we left we tried to catch a bus at Fulton - big mistake. No bus, no cabs - when the crowd at the bus kiosk approached 50 persons, we hiked over to Geary, figuring we could catch the 38 back down. Wrong again. We countd 17 buses 'Out of Service' or 'Garage' while we trekked back towards downtown. We'd gone over 2 miles when one went by, so full it wouldn't stop. A 2nd bus finally stopped just before Divisadero - let us on w/out paying fares, had apparently been told to pick up any stray bodies they could squeeze on. All that time, not a single cab that wasn't already occupied, nor any other working buses. But the music/atmosphere at the festival was great, and we're definitely planning for next year!
So I made it to HSBG belatedly on Sat. after an emergency trip to the doc Sat morning - spent the first hour in the city just trying to get through the lovefest crowds & on up to GG, what a zoo downtown was! (whooeee - didn't know so many people liked to wear thongs & tutus)
Missed some of the people I really wanted to hear, but had a great time with those I did see - but trying to get home took us almost 5 hours. Regretfully didn't go back on Sunday. Next year may just ransom off the kidlet and pay for that hotel room in the city.
Or purchase a small developing nation . . . we're gonna schlepp over on BART (we go from Pittsburg) & then muni up to the park; we're planning on both days - we've had to miss it for the last 4 years, and intend to make up for lost time - if you go, would love to meet up & actually greet the face behind the posts!
