The Beloved Infidels deliver honest emotion, intelligent lyrics and driving rhythms all wrapped up in a satisfying power pop package. Initially conceived by Jackie Doyle, a self-proclaimed devotee of all that is hooky and melodic, this band maintains an edgy sweetness through interesting song structures, caustic poetry and the occasional power chord. Unafraid to borrow from the past, they offer a fresh take on what you loved most about rock from the 1960s to the present, including girl-groups, surf, British invasion and New Wave. Still, the songs remain completely original and are performed with a distinctive twist that only The Beloved Infidels can provide.
Here's what they're saying about Trompe L'Oeil Girl...
"The Beloved Infidels aren't just Sout' Philly's sweetest pop-rockers. Jackie Doyle and Jim Fisher are the cutest couple (and drummer Phil Fizur's no ogre). Trompe L'Oeil Girl's a honey of a debut!" A.D. Amorosi/City Paper
"Philly doesn’t have the strongest history of girl-sung indie pop bands, but right away the Beloved Infidels recall two of our best: the defunct Snow Fairies and the going-strong Trolleyvox. The happy-go-lucky trio—singer/guitarist Jackie Doyle, bassist Jim Fisher and drummer Phil Fizur—is brisk, breezy and sweet. Beneath the bright-eyed exterior, though, are sharply observed lyrics that hit close to home if you pay attention.
The band’s self-released Trompe L’Oeil Girl opens with 'Suzanne', the first of many geographically exact story-songs. Opening with the quiet strum of a Jonathan Richman tune, it finds Doyle surveying a street that’s “Like it’s a California beach/ Not an intersection in rainy Philadelphia.” (Search the band’s name on YouTube and you’ll see that the video for “Suzanne” was shot around the Italian Market and in the M Room.) Later she muses, “There’s got to be one normal guy in Philadelphia.”
'Gasoline Can' traces a path of personal discovery from “Grand Rapids, Mich., 1982” to "Boston, Mass., I was 22" to “Seattle, Wash., 2002,” while the bass-bubbling 'Fishtown' relies less on scenery and zooms in closer on the characters. Aided by her gorgeously featherweight voice, Doyle’s songwriting is at once unabashedly romantic and cautious from plenty of experience. The line “Hey Romeo, let’s take it slow” pretty much sums it up.
Named for a technique of three-dimensional painting, Trompe L’Oeil Girl will take some getting used to for anyone expecting drums beyond a bare snare and cymbal or gloss beyond a fleeting keyboard hum. And the Beloved Infidels may cite Bettie Serveert and the Muffs as influences, but they sound more like Cub or a stripped-down Go-Go’s. More important, they give a pop-starved Philadelphia a perfectly infectious debut." Doug Wallen/Philadelphia Weekly

More critical acclaim for Trompe L'Oeil Girl...
“Fans of bubblegum pop as well as the pop music from the 60s and 80s will be delighted with Trompe L’Oeil Girl, because the band utilizes the influence of the best of these decades and infuses into it something that makes it up to date. Don’t let their sound fool you, you shouldn’t call this band retro, because they are anything but. What they really are is power pop of the highest caliber. The only downside of this record is that there’s not enough of it, which is hardly a downside, when you have an album of 10 pop songs that are nothing less than divine. You can hardly expect the listener not to be spoiled by such a creation. It is only human to want more of a good thing, and Trompe L’Oeil Girl is a good thing and then some…definitely one for the must listen file.” Andrea Guy, Mossip on Livejournal, Pittsburgh, PA
“Somewhere in Philadelphia, there’s a band that seems to have access to all the right hooks. They have even hung clever lyrics and fluid musicianship on those hooks to sweeten the deal. For the uninitiated, The Beloved Infidels is a melody-driven power pop group with songs that stick with you throughout the day and you’re actually glad that they’re riding cerebral shotgun. Vocalist and songwriter Jackie Doyle is the nucleus of this band and clearly a Cum Laude graduate of the power pop aesthetic, channeling the best moments from Bob Mould, Ronnie Spector, The Muffs, and classic girl groups from the ‘60s into Trompe L’Oeil Girl.” Jason Randall Smith, endlessshoutingmatches.mevio.com, Mount Vernon, NY
“Vocally, The Beloved Infidels sound a bit reminiscent of Blondie, yet with a slight touch of Lesley Gore. The music itself is pop verging on proto-rock. While tracks like 'Suzanne' feature poppy island-like vibes, others are a bit raw in nature and deliver a sound that is more organic rather than overproduced. The end result is an easy-listening experience that will draw you in with its unique hooks.” Zack Daggy a.k.a. The Mothman, Internet DJ: The Mothpod, Indianapolis, IN
“Many bands try to pull a sweet pop song with punk undertones and fail miserably, but The Beloved Infidels can pull that off with seamless effort while still keeping composure. This album really rocks! I’ve also noticed little hints here and there of other influences as well. The British invasion, some surf guitar, even girl groups of the 50s and 60s. Trompe L’Oeil Girl demands my full attention, and I love it! By the time I reach the song 'This Time Around', I am most definitely a new fan.” Kenn Deaton, KSPC Radio, Los Angeles, CA
“Doyle’s lyrics are quasi-quirky, never cliché and interestingly accessible. With simplistic accompaniment and melodies, reminiscent of the early British Invasion pop bands, the lyrics are the forefront of every song. 'Suzanne' is an encouraging ditty from one girlfriend to another about how love will come around again and not to despair. 'Fishtown' is the story of two star-crossed lovers who should fulfill their destiny and find true love in each other. On a more personal note, 'Hey Romeo' with its tambourine and beach music vibe and 'This Time Around' with the imitation rock organ are sung in the first person tense and are assertive about the hopes and desires idealized in a relationship. Along the same lines and in a more amusing tone is 'Accessory Doll' which is the signature girl power song of Trompe L’Oeil Girl.” Kelly O’Neil, Request Records, Orlando, FL
