Having just released their self-titled debut EP in January, The Benefit of the Free Man continue to build their repertoire of chamber folk songs that are as piercing as they are soothing. "The really fascinating thing about this band is their inversion of the standard band formula: the songs are all built around classical string instruments, minimalist percussion and the rattling cadences of Piazza's lyrics. All of this leads to a sound that is rich but unsettling; the negative space in the music becomes an instrument in itself." (Audio Reckoning) They have recently been rated as one of the top 50 bands to see in Toronto by Bevdale Mansion and were January's featured artist on theindiemachine.com. That was a great set at The Boat. Acoustic beauty, soul-stirring vocals, and a buoyant spirit (on the second stage also, which is a first) Great turn out for one of the best shows on this night.
