With the gig at The Rainbow last week, all the fund raising events are finished for now.  Jo and Anne will be concentrating on training before leaving Australia.

So far, the amount raised for the Big Issue is $10267!

So we have surpassed our goal.  Of course we'd like to increase that amount further is possible.  If you wish to donate to The Big Issue, there is a link below for further funds to be donated.

Jo and Anne will have a last party get together on return from the UK adventure to officially hand over the money to Big Issue and also to thank our various supporters.  Of course Anne wants it to be a musical event!

Here is the link to BI.....

Jo and I along with friends Gayle and Bron rode the Cyclosportif Marysville Bushfire Relief ride. Our collective legs could not make the final assault up Lake Mountain after 120kms around Alexandra, Eildon and back to Marysville past the mighty Cathedral Range. But it was a gorgeous blue skied day and we were all happy to help put back into the bushfire devastated region. It was indeed a sad and confronting sight, three months on with much cleaning up and reconstruction still to be done. Blackened trees were showing signs of regrowth, like tender green vines on a black post. Many hand painted signs of gratitude to emergency services and Australians for their support, and many locals out cheering us on as we rode past warmed the heart.

Jo and Anne have just ordered 36 of their beautiful custom designed jersey. Delivery will be third week of May. The jerseys will be worn by all the participants on our Whittlesea to Yea ride on May 23rd. The eleven of us will make quite a stylish statement as we ride together through this part of Victoria, some of our route has been affected by bushfire in February. We are pleased to be able to contribute to the local economies as they rebuild after the devastation. Jo's husband's Motor Cycle club are offering sag wagon and support to the riders. Anne has made her fruit and nut laden 'cathedral' cake for all to enjoy and keep up energy on the trip. Jo has done a mammoth effort organising the route, and friend Gayle Ilievski has cleverly supplied an elevation of the ride for participants.

Anne is organising another musical afternoon on Sunday May 31st 2-6pm at The Rainbow, St David Street Fitzroy. A great music pub, the same great jazz band as at the concert in February. John Curtis on piano has ably organised us all, Brae Grimes on Flugel horn and Trumpet, Ray Hood on Guitar, Stan Van Hooft on Bass and Paul Philips on Drums with myself on Vocals. Bebop, jazz standards and bossa will delight the crowd. We will have an auction of various items and pass a hat around for any left over change.

With sale of the jerseys, the Yea ride and the concert we will be very close to our goal of raising $10,000 for the Big Issue to update their computer hardware.

Jo and Anne are keen cyclists. Jo has been cycling since a back injury slowed her passion for bushwalking about 8 years ago. Anne started cycling in response to terrible motion sickness on public transport 4 years ago.

Jo has cycled the Camino in Spain 5 years ago during winter. She is returning to ride the pilgrim trail with a friend in summer this July prior to riding London to Paris with The Big Issue. In early July, Anne will be catching a train from London to Shrewsbury and riding through mid-Wales to the Snowdonia region to meet up with a very dear relative. she will then be riding down through Welsh mountains to Chepstowe to catch a train back to London prior to the Big Ride.

They will meet in London just before the ride, proudly wearing our very special and unique jersey with our sponsors proudly emblazoned.

What is 'The Big Ride for The Big Issue'? It is a fund raising ride from London to Paris, July 23-26 2009 covering nearly 400kms, finishing in Paris on the last day of the ride, which is also the last day of the Tour de France. The story of our fund raising project so far.... Jo and I are committed cyclists, commuting to work and enjoying riding on weekends around Melbourne and the many beautiful rural hills, mountains and coastal roads around Victoria. In August 2008, Jo and I were looking for more cycling challenges. Cycling has given us so much in terms of physical and mental health. We both felt that our cycling experiences had given us the belief that anything is achievable if you just stick with it, keep coming back to it. We were looking for more challenges, and there it was, riding London to Paris in a fund raising bike ride with The Big Issue. I had never done any fund raising, it seemed like a great form of personal development - and such a great cause. The sticking point was being Australians. We could not raise money for the UK! We decided to contact BI UK to request that we join them on the ride but raise money for Australian BI. They were delighted to have us along, and happily allowed us to to raise the required money for Big Issue Australia (after paying the cost of the tour operator). We are both so familiar with the Big Issue's great work that we were thrilled to be able to fund raise for such a positive organisation. The slogan - a hand up is not a hand out - is about supporting and empowering people to meet their own goals and find a stable base. The original amount of money required to fund raise was 2600 pounds between us ($5469 at today's exchange rate). After 8 months we have raised $8000. We purposely decided to raise $10,000 because BI is such a great organisation doing such wonderful work to help people turn their lives around. Our money has been raised via a jazz jam, a concert, a cycling trivia night, a hot cross bun drive, donations from friends family and even some strangers who have very kindly believed in our project. We have also had generous sponsorship from 3 excellent businesses - Degani Bakery, Cloth Shop and Schwob's Swiss Bakery (see our sponsors' logos in the photograph section)to create our own cycling jersey which we will wear on our commutes and of course on the ride from London to Paris. The jersey is in the final stages of completion and will be posted on the website soon. I can say it is very beautiful and very Australian (but no Kangaroos!). There have been so many excellent local community businesses who have supported out project. It is heart warming to know that there is such good feeling in the community to those who need a hand up. Our next fund raisers are a raffle and a bike ride from Whittlesea to Yea and back to Flowerdale. We are paying all airfares, registration, insurances, equipment and accomodation. The cost of the actual 3 day ride is coming out of the fund raising.

Hakkımda:

I am a community mental health nurse and cyclist. My fund raising partner Jo Southwell is a community health manager. Both have social consciences, and believe a healthy community is one in which we all support each other. We are joining The Big Issue UK on a three day fund raising bike ride London-Paris July 2009. We are the only Aussies joining the ride, but we are raising money for The Big Issue in Australia. We have to raise 1300 pounds each, 2600 together. That translates today to $2734.56 or $5469.12 together. However, having links with each country's organisation, BI UK have allowed us to donate our fund raising to BI Aus after paying the cost of the tour for them - 600 quid each or 1200 together. We have surpassed that amount already with our fund raising activities. Being tenacious, determined and committed the organisation the The Big Issue, we have decided to raise $10,000.00. The Big Issue Australia will then have funds needed to upgrade computers to assist create the excellent fortnightly magazine. Why? Because we really believe in the great work BI does working with the homeless and long term unemployed. The motto 'a hand up is not a hand out' is empowering. Empowerment raises self esteem with all the flow on benefits.
