The Bimmys
While most Sunday afternoons are spent contently with a roast chicken in front of the Hollyoaks omnibus, Lewisham’s Dirty South has other ideas. The graffiti stained walls are an apt backdrop for showcasing South London’s raw bludgeoned indie talent, some of which look barely old enough to stomach the new batman flick.
Much like when the Man U team of the mid nineties turned Alan Hansen a Liverpool shade of red, the Arctic Monkeys proved that kids can win titles. Support act Paper Plane Pilots are obviously inspired and have a mastery of distortion that would otherwise seem beyond their fresh faces. The band also possesses a drummer that manages to combine frantic thrashing with a powerful performance on lead vocals - two things Phil Collins was never accused of.
The boozy atmosphere though belongs to The Bimmys, who have the necessary swagger to get an audience going. Having recently recorded their first EP, the four-piece are gaining visible confidence with the ramshackle enthusiasm of their songs. Often straying into familiar post-libertines territory, The Bimmys retain identity through menacing and fragmented lead guitar that howls angrily alongside a notable pop sensibility.
While the set at times runs out of fresh ideas, tracks such as 23 show considerable composure and hint at a band with catchy potential. Stopping to pelt the crowd with Haribo, a good time juvenility oozes from The Bimmys that could stand them well in the future.
At present though, the band’s sound rests in a tentative position. If highly polished, their melodies could easily join the over saturated two minute heights of the current identikit indie pop scene (Pigeon Detectives, The View etc), but if The Bimmys experiment with the rawer elements of their songs, they have a far better chance of creating something more deservedly innovative.
