| About The Black Crabs |
|
The Black Crabs miraculously came to life when three stars collided deep, deep down near the bottom of the Great Blue Sea, hundreds of miles from inhabitable lands, or even a coffee shop and…okay, maybe they weren’t stars. More like asteroids. Either way, none of them could swim.
Perhaps it would be easier to understand explained this way…
Having banged his head one more time - and three times too many - the, now, former-motorcycle racer Jonathan “Johnny7” Stuart stumbled onto a dimly lit dance floor somewhere near the heart of Ballard, Washington. Unfortunately – well, perhaps we should say “fortuitously” – he immediately crashed head long into a tall dancing diva – the one and only Kirsten Ballweg! Crawling about in search of her keys, she spoke at length (and loudly) about how the music hadn’t been that great anyway, and besides, what we really needed around here was a good rock n’roll threepiece willing to take tradition by the horns and run with it. “I can outslap any chem student, but I need a mouthpiece.
"I do have an old guitar,” mumbled a bemused Johnny, not sure if he was on the same page “ but I never have been able to follow rules very well. And besides, what about a drummer?” But it was too late - “Kbass” had left the building.
Oddly enough, the answer arrived the next day by telegram from a forgotten hamlet ninety miles north of nowhere. Rumor told a drummer of great skill, a nice hair cut, (and a working van) toiling day and night in a silver mine…okay, maybe it wasn’t silver. But it was shiny. Anyway, the point is that the seeds were sewn – Tom, Kirsten, and Johnny were united.
Strange sounds began to filter out of the depths of Johnny’s Cleopatra Studios and before long the the Black Crabs emerged. And what exactly is this crabiness you ask? Bouncy Rockabilly that makes the kittens dance, sweaty Garage causing much rollicking (and drinking), and untraditional numbers that make the purists gnash their teeth and the poets frowns unfurl. I think Johnny even wrote a song that made young girl cry.
“Blast Off” the bands first CD earned a five star rating from Black Cat Rockabilly and an invitation to play festivals in Europe. Fred Turgis from Jumping Six to Six said “The whole album is played with a positive “don’t look back” attitude (very nice production work) which is a good way to take a fifty year old musical tradition into the new century. August 2007 saw the Crabs climb out from under a rather large rock for three weeks in Europe, touring Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, terminating with two nights at the Summer Jamboree in Italy. Great fun was had by all – check out the pics. Oh, and by the way, the rumours of a new CD are all true. Expect it out early in 2008!
