Sounds Like
"A really exciting sound from a lean, stripped down outfit"
MARK RADCLIFFE BBC Radio 2
"Just like the first time you heard the White Stripes...a dirty, rocking slab of blues that betters anything they’ve done before. Their past was promising, their future could well be golden. All hail the Black Knights"
CHRIS LONG BBC Manchester Introducing
"Superb!"
JOHN KENNEDY XFM X-Posure
"Making a big noise in the best possible way"
SAM WALKER BBC Introducing
'...some of the dirtiest blues-grunge riffs heard this century. Think Robert
Johnson if he had access to Tony Iommi's Black Sabbath guitar rig...gutteral, stripped down, sinister and sexy.'
WILLIAM BRADLEY Sandman Magazine
"A bluesy slice of primal rock n roll, somewhere between the jon spencer blues explosion & a possessed Jack White on guitar… Subba-Cultcha.com
"Impressively skilled, slightly incongruous and a bit threatening - what more do you need from a rock'n'roll band?"
CATH AUBERGINE Manchester Music
"Hypnotic and malevolent... a maelstrom of wondrous noise...Great songs too. If these lads aren't signed up by a major soon then we might as well all pack up and go home. It's not even a question of justice- it's a necessity; the music world needs The Black Knights. The end." Salfordmusic.com
'"Rock stars are gods that are beamed down to a show
before disappearing into the night to live lives of
privilege mixed in with a little depravity."
As the pristine white suited front man approached the stage his words rang though my ears...sussed cool you see in
The Strokes combined with the absolute Britishness
of tearing up the rule book and shouting at the world...A faultless performance, tight as a drum with an energetic style unlike a lot of the bands in Manchester. You must see this band, they will become your new favourite' guestlist
"Stripped to the bone, garaged up and beaten black and blue"
MARK BARTON Losing Today
"Igniting all kinds of debauched emotions, The Black Knights create a rare breed of grungy, garage blues that'll make your nosebleed. Comparisons will be made with The White Stripes but these guys are far more destructive, sexy and uncensored...Brilliantly confused and tremendously exciting."
SIMON S WRIGHT Sandman Magazine
"Think The White Stripes meets The Clash" Toxic Pete
Hailing from Salford, The Black Knights unleash their primal brand of voodoo trash/blues.
The band's love/hate relationship creates a volatile sound, with darkly poetic lyrics set to raw, stripped back guitar and drums; Think Queens of The Stone Age battling The White Stripes.
They are currently writing and recording new material, in follow up to their well-received ‘Parade of Piranhas' EP.
They have received airplay on a number stations including XFM & BBC6 Music, and interviews and sessions for BBC Manchester Introducing.
‘We generally don’t get along on a personal level; most days I can’t stand to be in the same building as that fucker’ offers Thomas Richard Pickford III (Drums), ‘but when we come together as The Black Knights, the whole thing just gels. It turns me on’.
Gary L Hope (Vox/Guitar) is an enigmatic figure; the ’black eyed preacher’ holding both a degree in English Literature and a criminal conviction for assault. ‘The conviction thing happened a long time ago and it’s spent now. I’ve always had the easy going exterior but it’s tempered with something beneath, a sense of outrage’.
Their live shows are an unmissable experience and their voodoo trash/blues style never fails to excite.
This review from Manchester Music (at In The City) sums up perfectly:
‘…the purple-suited, sparkly eyelinered, Satanic goateed Gary L Hope is still one of the scariest frontmen you’ll encounter. His vocals are best described as, well, imagine if Prince and Jack White had a child (no, bear with me) only he was born in Salford and fucking pissed off about it. This is backed by dirty great motherfucker riffs, often thrashed out on the bass strings, and drumming that sounds like a fight. They’re always good live but they’re absolutely on fire tonight, Gary pushing his guitar deep into the amp while Tom Pickford batters seven shades of hell out of his minimal kit. The interaction between the two is compelling; with a tight two-man set-up such as this they fix on each other constantly, with looks that fall somewhere between encouraging and threatening.’
Highlights including an exclusive instore at Zavvi Manchester , performing at the Friends of Manchester Festival 2009 alongside The Longcut, Kid British & The Joy Formidable, to name but a few, and recently played a show for BBC Manchester Introducing.
TBK also played three storming shows over In The City 2009 (Blowout, ITC Official: The Country Club and SJM Concerts showcase).
They have also supported The Hot Melts, To The Bones & Lissy Trullie.
Gary sums up: 'People leave our shows not knowing whether to fuck or fight; and that’s the response we expect'.
