About me: From travelling on a small budget, country to country, 28 years ago, we (Dawn & Dominique Villermet, owners/creators) used to sell things occasionally on the black market. Things like whiskey, jeans and electronics, would help offset the price of flight tickets.The name of this store came from our early exerpiences doing just this.
The Black Market started on Queen Street in Halifax 19 years ago, after two years we moved to our present location on Grafton Street. It's been a while!
We were enjoying a gypsy-esque lifestyle, full of travelling and street vending for 13 years until our second angel arrived (daughter, Leandra) and we decided to settle down in the place of our dreams.
Over the years we've established friendships with people in many different countries with many differemt cultures. We have always purchased from street vendors and small family businesses. and will continue to do so.
My Oldest friend is named Wangyal and is from Tibet. He is a refugee in Nepal with a tiny shop where he sells bags and wooden masks which are carved in the mountain villages.
I met my friend 18 years ago and we have continued doing business together. Now, he is planning on coming to visit us and stay with my family for some time!
When we supports these people, families and small businesses we touch the life of others and that feels really good.
