The inspiration for The Black Squeeze came when Joel went to a bar a while back to see a friend's cousin's band play. The bar was close to the house, they might actually be good and parking would be easy, so why not? Well, Joel ended up paying $5 to see the worst band on Earth. Then inspiration struck! "These guys are terrible and people paid money to see them. Surely, I could get a band together in a few months that would be better than that!" Surely, indeed. SO, WHY THE BLACK KEYS? First off, The Black Keys are awesome. They write great riff-based rock n' roll music that is really fun to play. Second off, they only have two people in the band!!!!! That means no bass players with attitude problems, keyboardists with a lot of equipments but no car or any other complications that come with three+ musicians. It is a mathematically sound theory. Third off, every time I have seen The Black Keys in Austin, a ton of people show up. If 1,500+ people will pay $20 to see the real thing, maybe 20 people will pay $5 to see to two jerks get on stage and do a pretty good job of sounding like the real thing. Time will tell, friends... time will tell. WHY NOT WRITE YOUR OWN SONGS? I'm glad you asked that. This is not a voyage into the depths of our souls in order to resurface knowing what our favorite color of the rainbow is. This is about playing some Rock in front of our friends and our not-yet-friends in the greatest town for Live Music in the World. We really love TBK's music and it is exactly what we would like to play. Plus, writing songs takes a long time and probably no one would come hear it. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TRYING TO PROVE? Almost nothing. Not trying to get famous, make any money or get chicks. We think we can pull this off and a bunch of people might really enjoy it. Lastly, we are a tribute band, not a cover band.
