Jason Rabinowitz made like a kid in a candy store when he started The Bloodsugars—he knew exactly what he wanted and came to clear the counters bare. With an unmistakable garage-synth pop hook in his ear and a honed songwriter’s aesthetic, he recruited bassist John Rosenthal of the Giraffes (Razor and Tie), and drummer David Beauchamp of The Jeffrey Lewis Band (Rough Trade), both NYC underground scene veterans. Together they created a sound for the future, drawing upon influences that include many of the durable songwriting talents – Television, Prince, The Kinks, The Clash, Elvis (from when he was Attractive to when
he was Cruel) – from our halcyon legwarmer days.
But fear not the gimmick factor that can limit bands with influences in this era: As the Village Voice notes, The Bloodsugars are “refreshingly unconnected to bands of the ‘80s in its simplicity."
