"Rockin" Robin Eig was first introduced to bluegrass while still living in New York. She is a songwriter who has been influenced by many types of music over the years. As a recovering band director she brings a spirit to the band's music.
Matt “Aiko” McAlear didn't listen to bluegrass until led there through the music of Jerry Garcia. A native of the North East, he spent his youth dreaming of moving west. In 1997, while living in San Francisco, he picked up the mandolin and started playing acoustic music. An early morning festival experience in Telluride, Colorado cemented his passion for bluegrass: after staying up till dawn jamming with folks he had only just met and seeing blood splattered on his mando from the hours of picking, he realized he was in love with the music and the moments it creates. The keeper of the off-beat, Aiko’s hard-driving mandolin playing is a hybrid of styles that are stuck in his head and just won’t get out. Aiko has studied with Radim Zenkl, John McGann and his metronome.
Tommy "Boom Boom" Widger lays down the foundation of the group, providing the bass lines, and the occasional vocal. He is at heart a rock guitarist, but the band tricked him into playing bass by telling him it will be the "coolest music he has ever played!"
Steve May is from the home of bluegrass, Kentucky, and has followed several musical paths through the years. He played bluegrass as a youth, what else are you going to play in Kentucky, and has long been influenced by a range of players and music ranging from the gypsy jazz of Stephane Grappelli to the progressive fiddle playing of Darol Anger to the groove of Brazilian jazz and choro. He is having fun coming back to playing bluegrass, especially the way the Revolution plays it!
Jesse Poteralski is our flatpicking guitarist extraordinaire. Yet another member of the group who discovered bluegrass music more recently, but offers up some sweet solos as well as great rhythm. He has been threatening the rest of the band with going back to school, and doesn't seem to believe that more schooling just doesn't help with playing bluegrass!
The Bluegrass Revolution is a hard driving string band based in Oakland, California. Coming from varied musical backgrounds, the members of The Revolution blend hints of bluegrass, alt-country, gypsy jazz, blues and progressive acoustic music with the traditional sounds of the acoustic guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and bass.
