  • Bio

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. >The Tangiers Blues Band was formed in 1998 after guitarist Chris Scianni (Dangerman, Echobrain with Jason Newsted) and drummer Dave Borla (Dangerman, Echobrain) met photographer/harmonica player Danny Clinch and discovered their mutual love for blues music. The first Tangiers Blues Band jam session took place on Thanksgiving night that year with other musicians and friends, including Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals, King from Cooley High, Mick Jones from Foreigner and tennis palyer/guitarist John McEnroe. The original line-up was formed after that with Chris (guitar), Dave Borla (drums), Danny (harmonica), Huey (lap steel), King (vox and guitar) adding their long time friends Dave Sellar (bass) from Darla Hood and Peter Levin (keys) who had played in various bands in New York City and currently tours with The Blind Boys of Alabama. The TBB line-up changes from show to show, with a deep rotation of musicians they have known and jammed with for many years, and in many different configurations. In addition, they have many "special guests" who will sit in with them for a night when they are around including G-Love, Phil Lesh, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Charlie Giordano (Bruce Springsteen) and Chris' father, Joseph Scianni. The line-up on the TBB studio recordings consists of Chris, Danny, Pete, King and Dave Sellars with Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and The Cardinals) on lap and pedal steel guitars and Mo Roberts (Shemeka Copeland) on drums. The recording was done in one day at Moon Palace Studios, mixed and produced by Tim Latham (Lou Reed, Tribe Called Quest) a long time friend of all the guys. In the early days, The TBB had a weekly slot at Lot 61 (Amy Sacco's club in N.Y.C) where they started experimenting with their set list. They soon realized that by "down-dating" current hits and reworking non-traditional blues songs, they could appeal to an audience that was not familiar with the blues, while throwing in "up-dated" versions of blues standards and originals to appeal to blues enthusiasts. On any given night, the TBB can play a set including music by Lady Gaga, Elvis Costello and the Clash that morph into blues classics performed by Junior Wells, Muddy Waters and Albert King. The band has performed their eclectic set of blues from clubs in NYC like Joe's Pub to the stages at Bonnaroo (2009), opening for Gregg Allman (2011) and playing at Presevation Hall during Jazz Fest in New Orleans (2011). .... .. .. .. .. ...... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .... Tangiers Blues Band at Joe’s Pub .... Made up of an all-star cast of musicians, the Tangiers Blues Band rolled and rocked the crowd at Joe’s Pub last Sunday. The 8 piece ensemble, fronted by a bedazzled and pimped out singer named King, brought the sounds of the South to the Big Apple. Bio:

>The Tangiers Blues Band is all about ... drinks.

> The Band started many years ago as post-Thanksgiving therapy [what would give one the blues more than a meal with your entire family?].

>The original jam session consisted of Chris, Huey, King, Dave and Danny, joined by Mick Jones [Foreigner], Patty Smythe [Scandal] and John McEnroe [7 time Grand Slam Champion, and he plays guitar!]. After that night, da boys knew they had something special.

>The band added "Lonesome" Dave on bass and "Sneaky" Pete ..boards and began gigging around New York at such places as Shine, Joe's Pub and the Hog Pit. Whether it was playing traditional blues like "Stormy Monday" or down-dating a modern classic like "My Sharona" into a Mississippi blues stomp, their notoriety grew as did their legendary bar tabs. They started a Monday night residency as the house band at Amy Sacco's Lot 61, playing for such fans as ..Bono.., ..Gwen Stefani.., ..Michael Stipe.., ..Bruce Willis.., ..Gavin DeGraw.. and ..Lars Ulrich... Bruce, Gavin and Lars were inspired enough to get up and jam with the band.

The band members are: "El Millionaro" A.K.A. Huey from Fun Lovin' Criminals-slide guitar. Platinum selling artist with a wax figure in Madame Tussauds and the only living Puerto-Rican/Irish lap steel guitarist.

"Waterside Slim" A.K.A. Chris Scianni-anything with strings. Has played in Dangerman and Echobrain [with Jason Newsted of Metallica] and is also undefeated in match play with sometimes doubles partner Johnny Mac [see above].

“King” A.K.A. King from Cooley High-vocals and guitar. NYC nightclub legend and Page Six staple…No one handles a velvet rope like he does. “Dangerous” Danny Clinch-harmonica and vocals. When he is not busy taking pictures of everyone from Willie Nelson to Pearl Jam at his day job, and known as John Varvatos’ favorite photographer, Danny can be seen playing harp with da boys.

“Chico Baja” A.K.A. Dave Borla-drums. Also in Dangerman and Echobrain. Was once a member of The Beaver Creek, founded by the infamous Jackie Starr, touring the world and performing in large theatres and small stadiums.

“Sneaky Pete” A.K.A Pete Levin A.K.A. “El General”-keyboards. Has played in most of the bands that have come out of New York in the last 20 years…Seriously.

“Lonesome” Dave A.K.A. Dave Sellars-bass. Since Dave’s mysterious disappearance after a show a few years ago, which is not Mob related, Brett Bass has quietly stood in until the case is resolved.
