Dennis Smalley: described in Blues Matters! as "Scottish blues best kept secret" and by both the Arbroath Smokie Blues Festival and Dundee Blues Bonanza as "one of Scotland's best blues singers", Dennis is a powerful and passionate frontman with one of the most respected voices in Scottish blues. His fiery delivery, alongside his onstage banter and jovial presence, have lead to many great reviews and drawn comparison with Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and of course Peter Green. High praise indeed then.
Alistair Morrison: the multi-monickered lead guitarist (who is also known by a series of pseudonyms) is the driving force behind the artistry and what has become known as the "Buddahlisation" of the band - that is, taking a great blues cover song and putting a personal stamp to bring new life to song. Alistair was called "a modern day Gimour/Hendrix" in a review of our 2005 Glasgow Jazz Festival appearance in The Edge Bar and his trademark psychadelic stamp on the blues has made the Buddahs stand out from the rest of the boring blues numpteys.
William Whitelaw: "Odd Sock" Willie (cos he never wears two socks the same) plays bass and picolo for the band and he is also known as "the politician" ; a reflection on his meaty, yet jazz inspired bass lines. Willie's runs (oo-er) are intelligent, funky and as he has been playing with Alistair for some 25 years they have formed a unique symmetry.
Stephen McGowan: "Sticks" McGowan is the drummer of the band and lends an energetic vigour and bravado. His performances in swing and blues rock bands outside of the Buddahs have added a unique feel to his percussionary antics, and this coupled with his innate love for blues music provides, in the words of a Paul Butterfield song, a "Drivin' Wheel".
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Albert King, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Ray Charles, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Chicken Shack, BB King, Pink Floyd, The Who, Ten Years After, Keef Hartley Band, Canned Heat, Freddy King, Albert Collins, Miles Davis, Dave Brubek, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, Savoy Brown Blues Band, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, Booker T & The MGs etc etc
Sounds Like
1960s garage blues with a healthy dose of jazz infused pyschedelica and powerful bluesy passion
The Blues Buddahs were a Glasgow based 4 piece, electric blues band, who played all over Scotland from 1999 to 2007 having taken part in numerous blues and jazz festivals along with great pub and hotel gigs. The band released 4 albums, including the recent issue of a 2CD commemorative album "We're Going Wrong"; and we were lucky enough to receive fantastic reviews from national press including Scots Blues News, The Glasgow Evening Times, Blues Matters! and www.icscotland.icnetwork.com. At the 2004 Arkansas Blues Festival Charlie Musselwhite said of the band "It's been done before, but damn, those boys do it well!"
