The story of The Blues Report began in early 2007. Donnie Beadles, lead guitar and vocals expressed an interest in putting a band together with drummer, Spencer Ferguson. It was around this same time that Spencer recieved a call from his old band mate, Mike Cole. Mike, who plays bass guitar, and Spencer were band mates in The Palace Dukes and Smoking Section many years ago. Both Mike and Spencer put their love for playing music on hold about 13 years ago to devote time to fatherhood. Mike called Spencer and informed him that he was ready to play again. Mike had just purchased some new equipment. It was perfect timing. Spencer was bitten by the music bug after playing drums in the Halifax County Little Theater's production of Pump Boys and Dinnettes. He asked Mike to come over and listen to some recordings made by Donnie. According to both Mike and Spencer, the decision to play took about 5 seconds after hearing the recordings. Not only did Donnie's hot guitar playing excite them, he also had lots of original songs that were perfect for what they wanted to do. Donnie, Mike, and Spencer made plans to get together and play the following weekend. It was a fun night of jamming. It was obvious from the start that there was something special about what these three guys were doing. The first night was also special because Spencer's long time friend, Bill Harris was in town visiting his mother. Bill. who is also a hot guitar player and Spencer have been involved with music together since childhood. Bill sat in and jammed with Donnie, Mike, and Spencer that first night. It was that night that The Blues Report was born. Donnie is a few years younger than Mike and Spencer (25 years). Donnie has been playing guitar since he was a young boy. Donnie was surrounded by music while growing up. His father, Elvis Beadles....yea that's right.....Elivs, is a talented musician himself with many years of experience. The musical support and encouragement Donnie has recieved from his father over the years is obvious and can be seen in not only his playing skills but also in his ability to take the a leadership role in organizing practices and overall musical direction. Prior to The Blues Report, Donnie played lead guitar for the Clarksville based band, Third Stone. Donnie, Mike, and Spencer decided early in the process that they would stick with a three piece band with a plan to include some area musciians in guest spots at various performances. Spencer invited a friend and sax player, Jerod Caligiuri to practice with the band one night. After hearing what Jerod was adding to the band, it was obvious to Donnie, Mike, and Spencer that the three needed to be four. Jerod was asked to join the band which he did without hesitation. Jerod is from Pitt. Penn. He moved to Halifax County after being hired as a teacher at Carlbrook. Jerod's favorite style of music is jazz which was a perfect fit for The Blues Report. Jerod and his sax has added some swinging to the band. Jerod also plays the flute, and keyboards which will be incorporated in the sound of The Blues Report as they continue to grow. In addition to playing sax, Jerod also plays percussion.
What makes this band work so well is simple. These guys have fun together, they respect each other, and they like each other. They all agree that playing music is supposed to be fun and they all believe in the freedom of musical expression. As a witness to some of The Blues Report's practice sessions, all of thier performances, and being a friend to the guys in the band, I can say without hesitation, that these guys are good and they will only get better. Let me close this by saying to each of you.......Go see The Blues Report!
