UPDATE/MORE INFO ON BOILS PUNK ISLAND CANCELLATION FROM GREG
Ok, we tried to be brief about why we had to cancel the punk island show, but we got some responses from people who were pretty upset with us for pulling out, especially for the reasons we cited. So we didn't want to get into too much detail with this thing, but we also want people to understand why we had to can it.
TOO EARLY - yes, we really would have to wake up very early (7 am!) to make it up there. And we got one response from a girl who said something to the effect of, "I wish i could just cancel shit in my life when its too early." I am an inner city high school art teacher, in west philly. Everyday, from monday to friday, i am up at 7 am to make it to my first period class which starts at 8:00. I also teach a community based arts program on Saturdays in center city, which has scholarship art classes for less privileged kids from the city, who are talented in the arts, but dont have art at their schools. You can imagine how much i feel like shit draggin my ass outta bed on a saturday! But i LOVE my kids, and i have a responsibility to be there for them, and they need me there as their teacher.
I usually don't expect the punk rock portion of my life to invade my early morning hours as well! But sometimes shit happens, often times on tour, we need to wake up early to get to the next show. The people running the main stage at Punk island had us sceduled for a noon-time slot. I didn't want to get into this, because i thought we'd sound bitchy, but im kind of forced into it if people wanted more than us saying "its too early." There are bands playing after us who are from the new york area, and it wouldve seemed appropriate to recognize a band driving from philly might deserve a slot a little later in the afternoon rather than the second slot of the day. Furthermore, we're not getting paid for this, which isn't a huge deal, but we're kicking our asses to wake up on time, make it there for a 12 o clock set while im assuming fans are still walking into the show. Its one thing if we're playing for free for a good benefit, weve played probably hundreds of benefits over our boils-career. But punk island isnt a benefit, it is a free show. BIG difference homies!
we had sceduling problems with the guy running the main stage before, at a previous show..i consider him to be a FRIEND, but i just dont think he and i are meant to work togetehr on shows! i think we have an oil and water thing goin. I respect him, and his band, but i disagree with how he runs his shows, such as having the philly band playing at noon, before some ny bands. (and im not talking about reagan youth and the blanks, they SHOULD be headlining definately!)
So that is a more elaborate explanation of our cancellation for punk island. we tried to originally leave it at, "its too early" because we didnt think people really cared if we were going to be there or not. and apparantelly, some of you DO care...and we're really appreciative of that! and we're really sorry we wont be there. We thank our good, good friend slug for inviting us to play it...we'll miss talking hockey with our friends reagan youth, and talkin shit with the blanks, as we have done for years! (guys, come back to philly!!!) And you guys reading this should GO TO THE SHOW! it is going to be awesome....we're not talkign shit on the festival...AT ALL! Go see THE BLANKS, go see REAGAN YOUTH...go support the new guys, FEET FIRST...go throw shit at our freinds in HATE AND WAR!
If i just "cancel" a day of teaching, it really fucks up my kids day, because i teach in a very fragile inner city environment. But i hope that the punk scene wont be as fragile as my school kids, and will udnerstand, and forgive us, for our cancellation. New York, North Jersey Kids...holla at us...we owe you guys a free show and we'd love to hook it up...at a normal hour!
Cheers, Greg BoiL
