The Bowling Gnomes grew up in a small town called Ingtonborough. The unlikely trio originally barely even knew eachtoher despite being in a class of only 41 students. Hi-fi was a local hero. As 4 time all-state Marco-Polo player, HF (as he was called) led the Ingtonborough High Capybaras to 3 straight tri-county region championships. Then a debilitating injury to his left ear left him unable to hear in stereo, effectively ending his professional career prospects in the sport.
Sci-fi became an unexpected friend at this time. The two had originally been lab partners in physics class, HF picked Sci to help his GPA. But after the accident HF found himself shunned by the popular crowd he once led. Sci was there and helped him through the tough period by introducing him to the rock music.
"I had only listend to hip-hop and bulgarian polka up til that time. Sci made me a mix tape, starting with Chuck Berry thru The Clash and all the way into modern slovakian death metal. It was a serious crash course." Hi-fi explains.
"Ha, yea! After that he was hooked. So he came over one day so I could play him more from my collection. While we were in the basement he saw my dad's old band gear. I guess that is the day The Bowling Gnomes were born sorta."
The two decided that it was inevitable that they become a band.
"Punk was just what happened. We didn't set out to do it, but when you can't really play I guess that's just what you call it. It was just the two of us then, it was aweful!"
The missing piece was Lo-fi. HF and Sci only knew him as the quiet brooding kid from the cafeteria. They weren't even sure he actually went to any classes. But he had a locker at the end of a hallway near the locker room.
"I had seen this kid before when I used to have practice. His locker was all covered in sickers. I remembered seeing a guitar stuffed underneath a pile of old clothes he kept in there once. I said 'Well, there's no one else in this two bit town who plays' and began brainstorming on how to get him in the band."
Lo-fi tells it like this: "I wasn't interested. I mean, this tall nerdy guy and a washed up jock asking me to jam with them? But I listened to the demo tape they slipped me just for laughs. But it was real. I had to admit it was real. And it was raw. They couldn't play for sh*t, but that's where I came in."
"That's LF, the real artist in the group!"
With Lo-fi's musical guidance, the band refined their craft. They began to build a reputation for tight catchy punk rock on the local scene. Poorly recorded live rehearsal tapes got copied and passed out at shows. Then after finishing school, the band decided to move to LA.
"College wasn't really on any of our "to-do" lists. If you're a band and you're serious about doing this, you need to live where the action is and you need to hit the road most of the year." says Lo-fi.
So the band found themselves renting a small apartment in the San Fernando valley. "It's hot out, but we basically sleep during the day and work and rehearse at night" muses Sci-fi. Touring consisted of the band's 1979 VW Van and the few pieces of gear they had cobbled together. The band coninued like this, touring and writing songs, for several years.
Their first full length album Thrift Shop Ball was recorded in the band's rehearsal space. They took the best songs they had written and set out to capture the same high energy their shows have. Sci-fi had build a computer using some what obsolete parts found cheap in local want ads. Borrowing some mics and a mixer from another band completed their makeshift studio.
"It was a learning experience," says Hi-fi. "We used to record using an old kareoke machine with the mic sitting on a barstool facing the band in our old basement. Now we had several mics on the drums and tracks for each instrument. But it was important. Out on the road, you can't make fans too easy if you can't give them a CD these days."
The Bowling Gnomes continues to take the rock straight to the people. Relentless slaves to the road, you can catch them in seedy clubs and dive bars all over the US. If you haven't had the chance to experience these punks live yet, Lo-fi has some words for you:
"Don't worry, we'll get to your crappy ass town eventually..."
