What's in a name? With a moniker like The Breakup, it would appear on the surface that the Southern California-based fivesome are primed to throw in the towel. But that's the farthest thing from the truth. If anything, the members of the co-ed pop-rock powerhouse are finally taking their initial, significant steps forward in building an immensely viable future through the release of their latest recording. And they want everyone to be aware of this mounting momentum, hence the EP's title, Don't Keep Us A Secret. From the '80s-inspired synth-pop of "Don't Fade Away" to the guitar-charged melodies of "S.O.S," the songs on Don't Keep Us A Secret are enough to simply support the idea that The Breakup are poised for long-term success.
Part of the band's current (and future) success can be attributed to its independent spirit and relentless work ethic. Launched by Melissa Koziel (drums), Francis Rabe (bass) and George Pepe (keyboards) in 2005, the Orange County act has already compiled an attractive list of accomplishments under its collective belt. Without a proper release, management or record label support, The Breakup has already scored radio play on influential Los Angeles-based radio station KROQ, performed at the Vans Warped Tour and even had its songs placed on MTV programs.
With its first official release on the deck, The Breakup anticipates hitting the road far beyond its Golden State borders. "That's what we've wanted to do — we're waiting for the day when we can just quit our jobs and do a tour," Melissa says. "There's no end — there's no such thing as ending. We've gone through a few guitar players and have gone through periods where we couldn't play shows because we had a hard time finding someone who can fit our style and also be dedicated. But when we look at the big picture, we have been able to accomplish a lot and still keep our heads up."
