  • Bio

"The Breezes," a song by the Breezes off of their forthcoming LP entitled The Breezes, is playing over the speakers at Breakglass Studios when I join the foursome of bonvivants in the middle of the day - 2:59 - in the middle of week - Wednesday - for a chat and preview of their unfinished debut album. Despite the midday hour, the air is smoky and the alcohol is wet. "This one's really mellow," explains Danny Cmon. "It's just for the atmosphere, like soft furniture. I grew up on big comfy couches, sunk low, plush and blue. Love seats that you can take apart and put in different formations. That's my whole music style. Easygoing, but adaptable. Did you pour a Danny?" Only a member of a band whose eponymous album features a song named after themselves would offer me a drink that he named after himself. "It's just gin and grapefruit juice," he adds, expecting me not to notice the hints of ginger syrup and paprika foam notes. And that is the trick of the Breezes: alcohol in general. .... "People don't have to worry about anything. This is just the bonus round. On the way you just have to hear the music you enjoy because it makes the whole experience better. Simple and plain," states Adam Feingold. Adam is the 21yearold frontman of Golden Isles, recently signed to Aquarius Records for an undisclosed, five-figure, one-album deal. "My life is a party!" Matthew Oppenheimer Jr. bursts in before things get too serious. "This is just a feel-good record so far, but you can tell from certain chord changes, lyrical content and harmony choices that there's a lot of emotional involvement," speaks an unidentified voice as I close my eyes and listen to the vivid and transfixing "Warm Wind," another approriately titled song by this Montreal septet. I'm feeling the buzz when James Benjamin, co-owner of Breakglass adds, "People used to complain about the record industry, how the labels were these poachers. Now everything is an endangered species." It is unclear whether he's referring to bands, labels, capitalism or the environment, but Benjy is right no matter how you slice this cryptic pizza pie of somethang. .... Regardless, in the words of Golden Isles' labelmates Sum 41, it makes no difference; The Breezes are dedicating themselves to creating a record that they hope "sounds professional" and "puts fun first and is just fun, but is deep." "I just love music so much and need it so much. When I'm bummed out, I put on music to cheer up or get into that depression comfort zone, depending on my mood. When I'm in a playful mood and it's time to celebrate, we throw on music. Or when I'm cooking up shellfish. It's always there, to the point where we ask, 'Does the music come from us, or are we just extensions of the music?'" Don't be fooled by whichever Breezes member said that... What Cyndi Lauper said about girls, the Breezes say about being in a band: Bands just want to have fun. .... "We've played outfoor festivals, hot little bars, house parties, a wedding, a record store, but this band grew out of djing every week at clubs and coke fronts that died. So it all comes down to what's coming out of the speakers." A bold statement from a band whose future plans include forays into the film world, a book of haiku poetry, exhibits of collage artwork, solo albums, a clothing line and, most interestingly, music videos, as well as the imminent launch of a personal website focusing only on the band. "There is nothing more satisfying than playing music that people love except for playing music that people love and then being applauded, thanked and paid for it, then having sex, shopping for clothes, records and exotic vintage gear, all while drinking something unusual in a foreign country like Brooklyn, with your best friends. We just love the whole ride and hopefully the music we create will show that we want the best for everybody and we're thankful to be able to give. Today's youth have it hard because they have to redeem themselves even before they know they messed up. It's an ugly time, even for a synthetic culture, and people are getting dirtier at a faster rate than ever to the point where the dirt is getting harder to recognize. Has there ever been a better time to let the pretty walls of music close in on everything? I don't know. .... Hopefully, this album will be released because it's halfway done and I need closure and I want to continue the party properly. So far, so good though. We just keep booking shows and practice every now and again, fall into the studio from time to time." .... Keep blowing, Breezes. ...... -Dick Tarragon .. .. Photo and photo editing by Meghan Rath
