The Broadway Kids alumni include Disney’s High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale, Andrea Bowen as Teri Hatcher’s daughter on the hit ABC tv show “Desperate Housewives,” Christy Carlson Romano from Disney’s Even Steven’s and Kim Possible, Greg Raposo and Christopher Trousdale formerly members of the hit teen platinum group “Dream Street.” Other alumni of note include Eden Riegel (“Bianca” on All My Children, voice in Dreamworks animated film, Prince Of Egypt and on soundtrack), Lacey Chabert (Lost In Space movie, Mean Girls movie and “Claudia” on Fox TV’s Party Of Five), Katherine Zaremba (Sisters, NBC’s The Jeff Foxworthy Show), Michael Shulman (recognized in the Best Actor Category in the title role of HBO’s Somebody Had To Be Benny), and Jesse Eisenberg (Fox TV’s Get Real and feature film Rodger Dodger).
The Broadway Kids, Broadway’s most talented young stars, became an instant hit in 1994 when they recorded their first album, “The Broadway Kids Sing Broadway.” The group was started by New York ophthalmologist Dr. Julius Shulman when his ten-year old son, Michael, was cast as Gavroche in Les Miserables on Broadway. When Dr. Shulman couldn’t find an album of songs sung by kids on Broadway, he produced the group’s first album with Michael and seven of his young colleagues.
Since then, The Broadway Kids have recorded five other albums, “The Broadway Kids at the Movies,” “The Broadway Kids Sing Christmas,” (special guest Kathie Lee Gifford), “The Broadway Kids Back on Broadway,” and “The Broadway Kids Sing America,” and released a 2 CD set,“The Best of Broadway.” Their newest release is titled “Hey, Mr. DJ!”
“Hey Mr. DJ!” is The Broadway Kids’ first album of today’s hot pop songs re-recorded in their unique style. Songs featured on “Hey Mr. DJ!” include Madonna’s “Music”, N’Sync’s “This I Promise You”, and “Pop”, “I’m a Believer” previously recorded by Smash Mouth, and many more. Using their music skills they’ve honed on the Broadway stage, the KIDS give their own spin to these pop classics. The tunes may be familiar, but the style is all their own.
“The Broadway Kids Sing Broadway” presents samplings from some of America’s best-loved musicals including, “Bye Bye Birdie,” “ Oliver,” “Peter Pan,” “Hairspray,” “The Wiz,” and “Les Miserables.” After a successful two-year run of their own musical revue, “The Broadway Kids Sing Broadway,” at the John Houseman Theater and the Lambs Theatre, The Broadway Kids are mounting a new show for next season.
The Kids have been featured on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, Live With Regis and Kathie Lee, and The Lena Horne 80th Birthday Tribute, and have performed for the NBA All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden, The Presidential Easter Egg Roll at the White House, The Children’s Defense Fund, Save The Children, and have performed for thousands at the closing ceremonies of the Goodwill Games.
