Sounds Like
the beatles went drinking with led zepplin, got into django rheinharts car that bob dylan stole and had a huge car pile up with so many vehicles that all that was heard was the mystical harmony of this perfectly bad situation; while on the street corner was a whino playing a harmonica, hovered over a can fire with a homeless barber shop quartet intermitently swapping stories of love, loss, good times, and better days.
The Bros. Marler, were concieved in a freak accident involving a noble, and strapping young man trying to rescue his neighbors cat and a lovely farmers daughter who was simply trying to cool off under the shade of a willow tree. The young mans faulty step broke the branch of the willow tree in such a fashion that created a sharp edge of the fractured limb, so that when falling, dad, as the bros. later called him harpooned his left testicle, and landed on top of the unexpecting girl, now referred to as mom. The result was rather serious, in that the somewhat thin, straight branch stuck into the girl piercing the skin near the pelvis causing a deep wound that went all the way down to her ovaries. The immediate reaction was to pull the stick out, which caused the testicle to be lodged inside her. Frantically, they rushed to the hospital, where surgeons carefully removed the testicle, cleaned and successfully closed the wound. The strange and traumatic event instigated an instant friendship, and almost miraculously, soon after the incident while still a virgin, she discovered that she was pregnant. Nine months later she had twins, and by all accounts from those who were in the prenatal ward, they came out of the womb screaming in harmony. It was destined that music was their fate. The bros. played music all of their life and as young adults, when destiny called they moved from Opelika, Al. to Athens, Ga. Both brothers played rigourously together and with other bands while finishing college(philosophy/history).
Throughout their lives the bros. were confronted with the metamorphosis of a memory. When once as children, their father got a phone number from a strange man with a large head, and huge dialated eyes who told them that the phone call would allow them to hear the return of radio waves long ago sent to bounce off of the now demoted planet Pluto. When they called, the sounds heard were more like white noise carried by a somewhat systematic, rythmic pulse. The twins were impressed, excited, and never really quite the same. As time went on, different catalyst within their lives and some mind altering experiences would transform the seemingly random sounds of their phone call to Pluto experience, into a manifestation of arranged songs, lended from their subconscious memory into a newly released cd titled, naturally: " Songs for Pluto ".
PART II
The Bros. Marler, are comprised of sibling songwriters and musicians Drew and Daniel Marler. These twin brothers grew up listening and playing music in a musically enthusiastic family, with their mother a pianist and father a writer and professional storyteller. They played their first show at a honky tonk truck stop at age 15, and began playing live shows regularly in their teens. Despite heading in separate directions after high school, the two reunited in Athens in 1996 to form the Bros. Marler. “The Bros. Marler’s musical style is a homogeneous mixture of the solo troubadour styles of Bob Dylan, and Neil Young, the power of Nirvana and Janes Addiction, the soul of Al Green and Marvin Gaye, the improvision of jazz and jam, psychedelic experimentation, and intricately woven harmonies, but it is always deeply rooted in folk, blues and country roots heritage.” ( Washington, Ga. newpaper )
The Bros., play shows as a duo and with collective band members, while both experimenting with other bands as working musicians playing all styles from jazz to pop. The Bros. Marler have shared the stage with a multitude of great musicians including, The Jerry Garcia Band, Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, Bloodkin, Michael Guthrie, Ken Will Morton, Drive by Truckers, and many other great musicians.
The Bros. Marler released their debut ,“ Songs For Pluto”, in summer of 2007, and since then have been represented at the Cannes film festival by Canadian/American records. Their music has been accepted and featured enthusiastically on numerous radio stations throughout the country. They have also been featured on several European stations in France, Belgium, Germany, Finland, Spain, and Italy, and are part of several compilation CD’s that have been submitted to radio stations throughout the world. “Songs For Pluto”, explores the depth of the Bros. Marlers’ songwriting, featuring a multitude of styles and harmonies blended with a roots heritage that is made its own. The CD, “ fringes on country and Americana, but with more quirk than either. The Bros. have their own style.”, which “succeeds quietly, with understatement, and subtlety.”(Flagpole Mag) “Songs For Pluto”, “ displays poise and impressive versatility, sharing time on lead and rhythm guitar, stripped-down drums, piano, harmonica and bass…this approach combined with the boy’s soul inspired, almost Dylanesque, double vocal stylings create an entertaining album rich in character and style.” (Performer Mag) “ The Bros. Marler has knocked the dust of f of sounds old and new, just as Songs for Pluto will surely knock more dust off of your stereo.”(Hittin the Note Mag). Regarding their live show, “They could be mistaken for a blues band or a classic rock band or an alternative rock band or a folk band, but really the brothers can play anything well… They put on a great show that I would recommend to anyone.” ( Corner News) Riding the momentum, they toured this summer for a month in Florida, and were accepted enthusiastically. The Bros. are currently booking shows in the Southeast and have begun recording their new CD at Japanski studio.
