Brud part 1: The Brud Beginnings__
Brud began their career as a political dance act called "Das Lebende Gefäß". Their aim was to reach out to the people during some of Germany's darkest days. The band consisted of Arnold Gunther (who worked for a fashion magazine) and Josef Abdul Heston who later became known under the alias of 'Jah'.
The band struggled to convey their messages to the masses without a front-man; releasing only dance music that became popular in the underground nightclubs of Berlin.
It was on a cold November night at Gunther's home-ground of Berlin, 1981, where he met a Russian fashion/philosophy student named Herman Jerricho, at an art exhibition. Das Lebende Gefäß became "Die Unglückliche Braut", which then finally became "Brud". Brud was soon whispered around the German music scene and with the three piece now set in stone (Gunther, Jah and Jerricho) their sound went under a series of violent changes. Heston's mixing desk was exchanged for a drum kit, Gunther dropped the synth for a guitar and Jerricho stepped up to the mic. Their first Ep 'Kalter Krieg' flaunted this new sound and they were soon signed to Yukon-7 Records and well on their way with their recording of "Rise up - Bring it down" - their 1982 studio debut. 'Rise-up' featured the songs from 'Kalter Krieg' with a new lease of life as well as songs written specially for the album. 'Rise-up' was originally penned to be a double 12" LP epic with two producers working on a record each. Tragedy struck the recordings when the studio was discovered in pieces early one morning, the incident remains a mystery to this day, the only clues being a cigarette packet stuffed with used cigarettes and several empty bottles of vodka.
The best tracks were merged onto one record and as a result the album is left sounding amazingly diverse in sound. However the incident caused a riff with the executives at Yukon-7 concerning the licensing for lost recordings. The album therefore had two releases, one under Yukon-7 Records and one under the band's own label 'Brud Records'. This caused a huge legal battle as two copies of the same album simultaneously rose through the German charts. Luck had it that the Brud copy sold more than the Yukon-7 one, forcing Yukon-7 to recall all their copies of the album from the shelves and the German public, leaving Brud with vast royalties on furthered sales (apparently not all Yukon-7 copies of 'Rise-up' were recovered, leaving a very rare version of the album still in the possesion of some Brud fans. A copy of the white Yukon-7 album, with a red fist on the front, is now expected to be worth £1500). The royalties still had a benefit towards Yukon-7 though, as some songs on the album were still under their licensing. Yukon-7 managed to buy shares into the Brud Records company and collaborate on Brud's next album which was to succeed its predecessor.
