The Brunswick Blues Shooters have held a Thursday night residency at the Railway Hotel, Fitzroy North for nearly three years.
Starting out in 2003, the bands home turf, as the name suggests, is Melbourne's inner North, which by band decree also includes any respectable hostelery visited by the band and meeting with their approval.
So the End of the Line Bar, far across the mighty flow of Ol' Man Bell Street, in Deep Preston, is included, as is the Wallan and Broadford Hotels, and Harold's hometown of Epping.
Occasionally the band has been known to venture to Melbourne's Southern, Western and Eastern climes, and, despite knowing nothing of the culture or patois, have been well received, given food, drink and shelter and small sums of money including tram fares, then gently despatched back to their own territory, which, strictly speaking, encompasses the Golden Mile of Nicholson street between the Railway in Fitzroy Nth. and the Lomond in Brunswick East.
The song selections include a hefty whack of blues drawn from the likes of Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Chicago Jimmy Rogers, segueing into the 'blue country' of Jimmie Rodgers (the singing brakeman) Hank Williams, Doug Sahm and George Jones, plus some old Hawaiian melodies, jugband music, Dean Martin songs and the odd Calypso, as well as e few of their own.
No-one is permitted to tell the band to 'turn up', and they have never been asked to turn down, though they do occasionally drown out the sounds of their audience talking, dancing, laughing or crying, arriving or saying goodbye.
Sometimes they are really, really good, and people are amazed; sometimes not so good, but generally people are having too much of a good time to notice.
They have a CD available through this site for $20, samples of which you are probably listening to now, and will probably make another soon if sales keep up as well as they have been.
