Buffy Musical Shut Down (for now)
Help bring it back:
Sign our Buffy Musical appreciation petition and let your voice be heard!
Buffy, Firefly, and all other Fox TV shows have been pulled from theatrical distribution.
Criterion Pictures notified us that effective immediately our Buffy Musical shows need to be canceled until further notice. Notice for this was very sudden and unexpected, and I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience it will cause.
The suspension of the rights for our screenings isn't through any wrongdoing of our own, but rather because Fox needs to fix some rights and residuals issues around the idea of screening television productions in a theatrical setting.
We were working to be in total compliance with everyone's rules and wishes, and were always striving to make this show totally official. Hopefully we can fix this issue and get the show up and running again.
I can't say too much more at this time, other than remind you to sign the petition. Will this bring the show back? I don't know, but it is a good way to show the higher ups that there is a lot of support for the show and that you all definitely want us to continue.
We do have the support of Joss Whedon himself, who posted a comment on Whedonesque:
This is hugely depressing. I will do everything in my power to find out the exact reasoning for this and try to convince those responsible what a mistake it is. Of course, the words "my power" might confuse my gentle readers into believing I have any. I don't know what I'll be able to do, and I've no idea even where to start. Nor do I think this was done maliciously or capriciously. But it's lousy news and it's bad business. I'm hoping the latter element might prevail. I'll keep you posted.
If you want a bit more information there's always the press. A slew of folks have been writing about our unexpected demise, including: MTV News, the Associated Press, E! News, and New York Magazine.
That's just a few of the articles that offer more details, but even better are the emails, MySpace messages, and blog posts from all the fans who have been so supportive during this bummer of a time. Thank you all so much!
