About me:
I wrote this book last year in the beautiful Dutch city of Delft. My wife and I lived on the main canal between Rotterdam and Den Haag and my desk looked straight over the canal-faring traffic. I was never short of variety and my view became a theatre to me. As the title suggests, I was intending to write a parody of sorts, but with the bombing of Lebanon as my sound track, I realized that it might not be so much a parody and perhaps it could be better construed as a commentary. I watched in horror as bombers flew in one direction and missiles flew in the other. The rights and wrongs of this tragic scenario are contentious, but to witness the destruction of such a proud nation on live television was profoundly disturbing. The only other event that made me feel so desperate was 9/11 and it strikes me tragedy is going to be a life long companion to us all. The oppression and suffering that is synonymous with Iraq and the tragedy that is Palestine merely confirmed this sentiment. At the time of writing, Darfur appears to be the next arena in which mankind can display his inhumanity. Publishing this book in any form was going to be problematic, because there are so many options to choose from. A writer could spend a lifetime peddling his wares from one agent to another, or even spend their time hawking self-published copies on street corners in the hope it might encourage readership. I was very honest with myself and realized that this book was inspired not by my own imagination, but by the quiet dignity and determination that the oppressed people of the world conduct themselves in circumstances that would render me hopeless and bitter. I concluded that the people who symbolically feature in my work have a far greater right to read it and I have a moral obligation to them which precludes any commercial opportunities. Any inconvenience or missed opportunity that might arise from publishing online becomes a moot debate in that context. I believe very passionately that it is this book needs to be read and I believe this is the only method that allows me freedom. And it’s free. I am absolutely certain that I am not the first author to release a book online, but I am equally certain that I won’t be the last. If you like the legacy: a comedy of terrors, then please tell others. Its writing was a very profound experience for me and I hope it translates to the reader. I have no desire to influence anyone’s mental frame of mind, but to the purist, mentally I wrote it in cartoon form. The characters were animated and not human in my mind. Each to his own.
