The Butter Thief Jam Band weaves a fabric of imaginative inspiration as a form of prayer, poetry and a style of music that can only be described as alap with a groove. With its free elaboration and spontaneous exploration, Butter Thief Jam evokes metaphorically colored moods in layers of trance and rhythm.
The Butter Thief Jam Band blossomed out of rehearsing the live Amritakripa show. We would get together twice a week and our sessions naturally evolved into exploring the songs through jamming. While venturing deeper into sonic sound scapes we would spontaneously arrive at music that was beyond us. The music would morph into something previously unheard by any of us - we called these the sweet spots; sweet spots that could not belong to any one musician or group. Based on these sweet jams we decided to call ourselves The Butter Thief Jam Band. Butter Thief is a name for Krishna - Young Krishna always had a way of sneaking in and stealing the butter, no matter what His Mother did to prevent it. This then is our approach to music. We take a piece of a song or a rhythm or a melody and we enter into the music not knowing where it will lead us; churning the cream, so to speak, in preparation for the butter. The experience is less about the results and more about the journey ...a journey through un-chartered landscapes and dream like visions. When we have lost ourselves in these travels and all sense of separation dissolves, then we feel that we have become the butter and as though we have ourselves been stolen by the mischievous Krishna - ahh what bliss!!!
