’Another Accidental Perfect Moment’
Like so much angst ridden music The Cabin Fever’s songs are riddled with deceipt and supposed charm, but unlike the rest it is the characters in the song rather than the songwriter himself who are guilty of the crime. The Cabin Fever refresh with an ethos and sound so honest and far reaching it’s hard not to like… a lot.
Anyone reading his MySpace bio may become wary but between the statements hinting at depression and his diagnosed paranoia (out in the open from the very start) lie touching vignettes and statements; “The experts told me to use a mobile phone to communicate with spirits when im (sic) in public (so it won’t appear as though im talking to myself). They told me it doesnt (sic) even have to be on at the time.” It is important to get a feel for this complex, contradicting mentality and fantasy reality he imbibes before the music (each song accompanied by a painting) is discussed. When he sings “I’m coming to get you, hold on”, on the arresting ‘Hold On’ one is unsure if the saviour is out there(italics) somewhere, and the song is a wistful hope, or if it is a determined first person statement of intent.
Guitar strums and cascading keyboards sit aside vocals that somehow echo a clearer headed Elliott Smith and the pop sensibilities of Casiotone For the Painfully Alone (at his most sensible) sharing a bed (where all his songs are created) with a less advanced, but no less fervent Hebden. The underlying/overriding sense of despair and enclosure invades most songs giving them a unique closeted feel but already snippets of bedroom wisdom and relationship envy; “If she doesn’t want me then what does she want?”, demonstrate a mind becoming more adept at his chosen craft.
He is not a fan of Dermot O’ Leary or The Delays, but he does like free firework displays and smoking the herb for instance. “Kids don’t know what there (sic) buying”, he states, “…don’t listen to ‘[F]rank’.” Lets just hope our planet embraces his talent as much as the inhabitants of “SEFACERANIA” where his album is apparently number one. Perhaps they are blissfully free of “the whinning (sic) wuss music of the [D]elays”, Big Brother’s Little Brother and happily thankful for the ease of distribution for new and interesting music in the 21st century; the songs are supposedly made in a day, and put straight onto MySpace for instant distribution, feedback and comment.
A more polished album should be expected soon, as should the inevitable breakout from MySpace (HisLittleBedroomSpace) to somewhere better, slightly less confined.
