In the short time that we have been in existence the Calabash Club has been able to:
• Set up a series of 4 workshops, teaching 8 - 16 year old students all aspects of carnival costume making and design.
• Took part in the national promotion of carnival at Trafalgar Square and was involved in a parliamentary debate at the House of Commons, promoting the culture of carnival, with the Notting Hill Mass Bands Association, of which we are a member.
Held fundraising activities throughout 2004, including a dance in October in the presence of H.E. The High Commissioner for Grenada, Mr Jocelyn Whiteman. International Grenadian singers "Squeezy", Cyril Charles and Jah Glory donated their services free of charge. Their performances raised £200 which was used to update an elderly person's house which was damaged as a result of Hurricane Ivan.
• Took part in two local festivals in the Borough of Wandsworth.
• Presented certificates, signed by the Mayor of Wandsworth, to all our 2004 under 18 participants.
Our music is supplied by Leon "The GodFather" supported by Hotwax, Des and Prince.
Please come along to one of our many functions run by members of our committee.
We would love to have any comments and suggestions, so leave us a message or email us at calabashcarnvialclub@hotmail.com
