InfluencesThe Calmes Triplets extend their appreciation and admiration to choreographers, teachers and musicians that have given them inspiration and guidance. In particular, Yousry and Nourhan Sharif (www.egyptianacademy.com) have given countless hours of their time to mentor them with their consummate knowledge and ability to teach...Also, Jamila and Suhaila Salimpour...Faten Salama…Karim Nagi (www.turbotabla.com)…Shawkat Sayyed…Saphira…and Elysa...A very special thanks goes to Rachel Brookmire (www.saharadance.com), who as their first instructor, shared with them her beautiful and graceful approach to dance; and of course, the lovely Belly Twins who inspired them to search for a belly dance class in the first place! Their music teachers include Robyn Fisher, Rita Salzberg, Kathryn Drydyk, Daniel Mason, and Suzanne MacIntosh of the Lexington Philharmonic in Lexington, KY; and Teo Tetel of Peabody Institute in Baltimore, MD. Their orchestral conductors were Nicholas Lacanski and Philip Miller. A true jazz aficionado, their father fostered their love for many greats such as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Dave Brubeck and countless others. He also paved the way for their love of classical music, exposing them to composers and musicians such as Berlioz, Mozart, Saint-Saëns, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, J.S. Bach, Mozart, Ravel and Yo-Yo Ma. Their love for all cultures, and specifically influences from China to Japan, India to Bali, Egypt and the Middle East, and the European flavors of Italy, France and Spain, have surfaced in their art, dance, and their studies in languages and music. Photos from Saharabesque! 2008 Fraternal triplets Beth, Laura, and Melissa Calmes were born in Morgantown, West Virginia, and spent their formative years in Lexington, Kentucky. They began their musical education in the fourth grade and by age twelve, began to play as a trio. They performed with the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra and the Central Kentucky Youth Symphony during their primary education. At the University of Kentucky, they furthered their studies under music scholarships, where they performed with the UK Symphony, the UK Opera, and in chamber music settings. After graduating, they relocated to Washington, DC where they continue to perform as The Calmes Trio for weddings, receptions, corporate and private parties, and various other events. They began their education in Middle Eastern dance and music in 2000, commencing their studies with Rachel Brookmire at Sahara Dance; then focusing their training with Yousry and Nourhan Sharif, Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour, Faten Salama, and Karim Nagi, as well as logging countless hours in classes and workshops. They continue their education with master instructors in Washington, DC, New York, and California. Certifications include Suhaila Salimpor Level I, Sahra Saeeda's Journey through Egypt Level I & II, and Sahara Dance Teaching. Known for their creativity with costuming and choreography and down-to-earth style, they have delighted audiences with their music and dance. Their ability to move as one, yet emerge as individual personalities has been a cornerstone of their performances.
