OUR PURPOSE
To provide a safe no-kill shelter and adoption facility for cats in the Lincoln and Southeast Nebraska area.
OUR STORY
The Cat House was started because of the overwhelming need in our community for a "no-kill" alternative to traditional shelters and because of the ever-increasing need for additional feline rescue and adoption resources. The volume of unwanted, abandoned and stray animals needing homes may not be apparent to the general public, but it is staggering. Sped a single day handling our "hotline" and you will be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem. Adoption and placement services are one important aspect of making a difference.
ADOPTING
Cats come to us from a variety of situations: someone found a stray, an unaltered pet has a litter of kittens, individuals giving up their pets for a multitude of reasons. But while the sources and reasons are endless, the result is the same—adoptable, loving cats and kittens needing homes.
Every cat or kitten that comes to us receives veterinary attention, a temporary home with all their basic necessities taken care of, and a lot of love. Before being eligible for adoption, each cat or kitten is examined by a vet, microchipped, receives their rabies vaccination, is tested for Feline Leukemia, is checked-over and treated for worms, fleas, earmites, ringworm, etc., as necessary. And, most imporantly, is spayed or neutered.
It is the policy of The Cat House that every cat or kitten must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. We recognize that spay or neuter surgery can be expensive; that "accidents" can happen to even the most well intentioned. So, by providing this service before you adopt, we can eliminate one thing from your "to do" list and we can all feel good knowing that we are helping solve the problem, not contributing to it.
ENDING EUTHANASIA
What would it take to end the use of euthanasia for population control in our community? What can be done about the homeless and unwanted animals right here in Lincoln? No one factor created the problem, and no single strategy will solve the problem. Ending euthanasia as a means of population control requires a community-wide effort to find homes for animals as well as the need to change human attitudes and behavior. We at The Cat House believe to be successful, a comprehensive strategy aimed at eliminating the use of euthanasia for population control in felines must include:

• Aggressive Spay/Neuter Policy and Resources
• Education Programs
• Rescue Outreach
• Feral Cat Program

DONATIONS
At this time, most of our operating expenses come from our adoption fees. As a small, all volunteer group, large fund raising efforts are not easily accomplished. Donations take many forms. Donation of much needed funds, donations of items to fill our wish list, donation of time. From sinks to soap, carpet to cars, towels to toys, from volunteering your time, to the generous donation of your dollars. No matter what form your donation takes, it is at the center of our efforts to better these cats' lives.
VOLUNTEERING
If you are interested in volunteering with The Cat House, we have many opportunities available, from making phone calls, to medicating cats. We need two shifts of volunteers to care for the kitties (clean boxes, feed and water), help with medications and staff our adoption locations, 1935 Q street and PETsMART. Many of our kitties need people to simply sit, pet and play with them. If you are interested in helping you can fill out a Volunteer Application online.
