the Catillacs are a great band that plays a variety of vintage American music including rockabilly, rock-n-roll classics, blues, & country. We specialize in hits of the 1950s-1960s, but also do a variety of music up to the ‘90s. we take requests, and can often play them. We are professionals: We're only as loud as we need to be, can set up in a small area when needed and will work with most budgets. We like to work and will travel. We're always looking for new places to play... How about your place?
How It Began...
The band was started in early '07 by singer/guitarist Richie "King Juju" Bean. It was conceived as a rockabilly trio, and included drummer Susan Costa and bassist George "Mr. Martini" Burton. This lineup stayed solid and worked steadily, blossoming into a unit that could also cover blues, classic rock, classic country, oldies, and originals. They released the award winning CD "Meow Mix" in August of '08 and garnered radio play all over the US on indie stations and pod casts. Costa left the band a year later. The drum seat was passed to veteran Portland stickman Terry Smith. Keyboardist Leon Holder joined at the same time to complete the lineup.
Bios Richie "King Juju" Bean is a veteran of the Portland blues scene for over 20 years. He played guitar and sung with Roseland Blues Band, Hudson Rocket, and the King Juju Trio. He plays lead, rhythm, acoustic, and slide guitars with his nails, preferring vintage instruments and small tube amps. Richie lives with his wife and daughter in La Center Washington.
George "Mr. Martini" Burton is the youngest member of the band, yet at 26 is often invited to jam with such luminaries as Jim Mesi, Steve Bradley, Curtis Salgado and many other major Portland bluesmen. George has studied bass and theory under journeyman bassist Timmer Blakely for many years and builds hotrods in his spare time. George plays a Fender Jazz Bass hand pinstriped by the famous striper Mitch Kim.
Leon Holder has played keyboards for over 40 years. Along with Richie he is a veteran of Hudson Rocket and King Juju Trio. Hudson Rocket was nominated for the Muddy award and released "Where's Hudson?" in 2000. King Juju Trio opened for Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Smokin' Joe Kubek, Walter Trout and others. they also did a 14-month residency at Vancouver's Top Shelf Martini Bar. Leon lives in Vancouver WA.
Terry Smith has played in many great Portland bands including the Fabulous Fairlanes, Jim Mesi Band, Steve Bradley etc. He lives in the St. Johns area of Portland in a 100-year-old house. Terry builds replicas of monster & sci-fi movie icons and sells them all over the world. This has led him to meet people like Eric Clapton and Captain Beefheart. He can fix or build anything... He even built his own drum kits!

Quotes & Press...
The Catillacs are a great party band- they've got a fun, rockabilly vibe... yet it doesn't just stop there. They are rounded out by thoughtful lyrics and tasteful musical arrangements too. They're also one of the most professional and courteous bands out there. I love the Catillacs! ---Lisa Mann
The Catillacs are a trio that is versatile and can play blues, roots and rockabilly and a taste of country without breaking a sweat. ---Kurt "Swingcat" Johnson - POSITIVELY ENTERTAINMENT
For our electric set, following the break, we will be welcoming back another good friend, Richie Bean as he brings to us his new group the Catillacs. If you like to hear some fun old time Blues mixed with Rockabilly, Honkey-Tonk, 60's-style Rock and Outlaw Country, then you're definitely in the right spot, because the Catillacs will be blending all those sounds into their exciting and enjoyable presentation.
Richie has been kicking around a number of bands in the Portland area for many years which includes being a founding member of the Hudson Rocket Band and leading the popular King Juju groupings, offering his sizzling guitar. In the Catillacs, he is joined by bass playing George "Mr. Martini" Burton who has also been seen around the Rose City for quite a spell, often working with the likes of Steve Bradley and Jim Mesi. Rounding out the trio is drummer Susan "Crash" Costa working her way around the globe in bands from Great Falls, Montana to England, Chicago and Boston before landing here in Portland. If you saw these guys at Journey to Memphis competition back in June, or at a club near you, then you're already aware of what a jumping good time you'll have with the Catillacs. ------Greg Johnson, CBA President - BluesNotes
