About me:
Hey! My name is Ryan. I got tired of going to Celiac meetings and reading about Celiac when it all seemed to cater to the uber young or the middle aged to older adult. So, I'm 26 and I've teamed up with the Celiac Disease Foundation to show the Celiac community that just because we're young...doesn't mean we don't matter. From what I've been told, it's hard to reach out to us, hard to raise awareness...I'm here to change that. Let's band together, have our voices heard, live healthy and rock out! This page is for all that are young. Young professionals, young adults, teenagers, and the like. It's okay to listen to hip-hop, punk, electronica, emo, ride a skateboard, own an xbox, go to college, be in a band, like dying your hair, kick it at a club till the brink of dawn, have a pierced nose, frequent Urban Outfitters, watch MTV, watch BET, watch VH1, not just watch college and high school ball but play it, remember the first Real World crew, know the characters of the OC, be in highschool, wear DC's/Fubu/Mudd/Gap/Timberland/Zoo York/Hollister/Quicksilver/Abercrombie/Roxy, and still have CELIAC! Let's mobilize.
We can still be hip, in style, young, know what's going down, and have
CELIAC!!!

Who I'd like to meet:
20's, Teens, Young Adults, College Students, High School Students, Generation X, Generation Y, the Millennials, The Internet Generation, The MTV Generation, Generation C, Echo Boom Generation, Generation Z, The iGeneration, the Boomerang Generation...
We've got many names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generations)
...who knew?
Anyone who is serious about: - Banding together - Getting in the "know"
- Being recognized as a community that Celiac does affect
- Working to get companies/medical institutions/support groups/and the like to cater to us a little more
- Getting Diagnosed and dealing with it in a positive and cool way
- Rocking out!
Anyone who understands that the only way to treat this is to:
A) Figure out that you have Celiac by means of getting diagnosed
B)Eat Gluten Free which isn't as freaking bad as everyone wants to tell you!

Check it out: Celiac Disease may appear at any time in a person’s life. The disease can be triggered for the first time after surgery, viral infection, severe emotional stress, pregnancy or childbirth. CD is a multi-system, multi-symptom disorder. Symptoms are extremely varied and can often mimic other bowel disorders. Infants, toddlers, and children often exhibit growth failure, vomiting, bloated abdomen and behavioral changes.
Do You Have These Symptoms?
CLASSIC SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE:
abdominal cramping, intestinal gas, distention and bloating
chronic diarrhea or constipation (or both)
steatorrhea – fatty stools
anemia – unexplained, due to folic acid, B12, or iron deficiency (or all)
Unexplained Coolness and Popularity
weight loss with large appetite or weight gain
OTHER SYMPTOMS:
dental enamel defects
osteopenia, osteoporosis
bone or joint pain
fatigue, weakness and lack of energy
infertility – male/female
depression
Aphthous ulcers
Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) is the skin manifestation of celiac disease characterized by blistering, intensely itchy skin. The rash has a symmetrical distribution and is most frequently found on the face, elbows, knees and buttocks. DH patients can have gastrointestinal damage without perceptible symptoms.
Get Diagnosed
A person seeking preliminary diagnosis must be consuming gluten.
Specific antibody blood tests help identify the presence of CD and are the initial step in screening and should include: IgA endomysial antibodies (EMA), IgA tissue transglutaminase (tTG), IgG tissue transglutaminase and Total IgA antibodies. It is essential that patients with positive antibody tests, and those with an IgA deficiency, have a small bowel biopsy to confirm the diagnosis and assess the degree of mucosal damage, which is performed endoscopically.
When serology and biopsy are inconclusive, testing for specific HLA (human leukocyte antigen) genes associated with celiac disease may be helpful in screening for CD. If these genes are NOT present, it is unlikely that the individual will develop CD. A positive HLA or genetic test, however, does not mean that the individual has the condition, as these genes are common in the general population. Patients should consult with an experienced physician to ensure proper diagnosis.
Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) is diagnosed by a biopsy of a skin lesion and staining for IgA in the tissues. More than 85% of DH patients have small-bowel sensitivity to gluten. Everyone with DH needs to follow a gluten-free diet.
