Classical Musicians, Tearing and Sawing Through Classic Rock Since 2002
Becca and Susanna, classically-trained cellists, both went to the Oberlin Conservatory, but only really got to know each other a decade later at a friend's party in Watertown. A fan of hiking and funky acoustics, the friend suggested that the two bring their cellos on a hike and then play some tunes in a ravine. The prospect of turning antiques into kindling didn't thrill the cellists, so instead they decided to start playing duos at friends' parties, getting paid in chocolate and compliments. It was the usual string stuff: Bach, Handel, Haydn. But they also tried out a couple of Susanna's Beatles and The Doors arrangements. Those were a hit. Emboldened, the Cello Chix started showing up at Open Mic Night at the Burren, replaced their traditional cellos with electric ones, ditched the Baroque, and soon got gigs playing rock music at bars around the Boston area. The latest addition to the band is kickass percussionist George Nickson, who's as comfortable with a drum set as he is with a glockenspiel. The Cello Chix now have a repertoire of over 50 classic rock, jazz, pop and Latin tunes, a loyal and sizeable following, and a CD,under the covers. Check them out at cellochix.com
Thanks for your support of our anti pay-to-play site. It's companies like Afton Live (formerly Big Time Entertainment) that will ruin the scene for all musicians. Glad you took time to check it out! All the best!
I don't think I ever thanked you for the add so better late then never, thank you! Was just back in Boston but missed your show. Got distracted by that ole' demon alcohol. Hope to see you guys play live sometime. Love the songs!
Hope you can take a few minutes and check out my photography. If you like, let me know. I love feedback, good or bad.
Hope you are having a great weekend! Don't be a stranger. :)
Hey Cello Chix & Drummer Guy Great show at the Plough on Friday. We loved the music. Great cello / bass players and a great drummer. I have never heard Bouree live before. It's one of my favorite tunes and it sounded great even without the flute. All the Best Larry & Karen
Thank you for the kind comment Becca! I just recently had touring musician/electric cello player 'Melaniejane' from Wisconsin at my place for a few days and I sent her to one of your shows! (I had a gig and couldn't go) She loved it! I'll catch y'all soon again for sure!
Please do make the Passim show if you can! October 1st @ 8pm!
