Our Story-
The Chainsmokers have quite the interesting story...
It was a winter Wednesday night in NYC 2007 and both Rhett and Alex were out and about. At the time, Rhett had never met Alex and vice versa. Nevertheless, at that time Alex was hosting a table at Marquee wednesdays through the wonderful GBH...times were tough money was needed and free alcohol was key. The party generally sucked, Long Island's finest and retarded FIT girls (we love you FIT! just not all of you) The night went on and the party was winding down, in fact it was DEAD! BUT good old Marquee has a rule you must stay till 3:30AM or no money. So, Alex sat there all alone with a full bottle of vodka chainsmoking ciggs and watching the clock wishing a lightening bolt would strike him down or the place would set fire.
Neither happened, but something much more amazing did. Suddenly a strapping young gentleman in a leather jacket looking like he had just finished a 2 week bender (he probably had) walked up to the table and introduced himself (I think, these details are a bit hazy as we were both shit faced) So lets assume we did...
That was the first interaction with Les Chainsmokers...Alex, who was excited to have finally met a dude that was cool and not wearing G Star with some Air Force Ones and a button down shirt said " Listen man sit down we are going to hang out we have an entire bottle lets get shitty (we were both already wasted)".... Half a bottle later we were deep on conversation about NYC girls, drugs, music, music and more music.
Not exactly sure what happened the rest of the night but, from that moment on Rhett and Alex would hang out everywhere share girls together (Marya and Julia holler at us!), whiskey, music, joints, you name it...the dynamic duo of sorts, except we openly recognize that were are both pussbags...It was only a matter of time that we realized NYC music sucked and there needed to be an injection of bananas into it...
Individually Rhett and Alex had been listening to music all their lives, and amassing a serious collection of music throughout all genres. Then, suddenly the time came when they looked at each other, most likely at 1Oak and said, "I cannot take this shit anymore we have got to DJ and take over." So they combined collections set up the equipment and got to mixing.
A year later we are spinning parties, bringing a rage room dance energy, getting absolutely housed, spontaneously playing the "Full House" theme song, dancing our faces off and blowing speakers all over NYC.
Now, the Chainsmokers's name came about in a very obvious way. We smoke. A lot. Naturally, the name backfired as ciggs cost 10+ dollars in NYC and now we are going broke while we're killing ourselves. We tried for a sponsorship with Phillip Morris but we were flat out denied. They sent us a serious letter claiming that we "weren’t Phillip Morris material." Hmmm, whatever (maybe a cigarette sponsorship is not the best idea) Look out for the Chainsmokers in a city near you before we develop a ridic black lung.....
