Bart Miltenberger - trumpet, flugelhorn; Matt Davis - electric and acoustic guitar;
Michael Taylor - acoustic bass
Influences
Everything. All kinds of music and people. When writing for this group I focused on listening to many different kinds of trios and how the musicians interacted with each other and with the composed and improvised material. The trios of Jimmy Giuffre (with Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer, as well as the Steve Swallow/Paul Bley trio) were a big influence in particular because his groups also had no drummer. Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Lester Bowie, Louis Armstrong, Dave Douglas, Gil Evans, etc. remain heavy influences.
What we're listening to right now:
Bart: Jimmy Giuffre 3 - The Western Suite
Paul Simon - Paul Simon
Taylor Ho Bynum - Other Stories
Matt: Joni Mitchell - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
Charlie Parker - Complete Dial Sessions
Dave Douglas - One Thousand Evenings
The Chance Trio invites you to a concert we are very excited about:
The Chance Trio’s Tribute to Giuffre
The Chance Trio performs Jimmy Giuffre’s Western Suite and their own Suite for Giuffre
Thursday, February 12, 2009 – 8PM
Philadelphia Art Alliance
251 South 18th Street, Philadelphia
Presented by Ars Nova Workshop – tickets available now at www.arsnovaworkshop.com
Special guest: Composer, UPENN Composition professor, and former Giuffre student, Dr. Jay Reise
The music of saxophonist/clarinetist/composer/bandleader/educator Jimmy Giuffre has been a big influence on The Chance Trio. Giuffre, who passed away last April, was never a household name but in his quiet, singular and uncompromising way he was truly a pioneering figure in jazz, and more inclusively, American music (if you don’t know much about him check out the links below). Giuffre went through many stages in his artistic evolution and his 1958 Western Suite (with Jim Hall on guitar and Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone) is perhaps the quintessential Giuffre piece of that era, combining elements of jazz, American folk music, and contemporary classical counterpoint into a concise statement of quiet beauty
The Chance Trio’s Bart Miltenberger has transcribed the Western Suite and for this concert they will perform it in its entirety as well as an original suite dedicated to Giuffre. In between the two pieces, renowned composer, Penn music professor, and former Giuffre student, Dr. Jay Reise will join Bart for a discussion on his firsthand experiences with Giuffre, the man, composer, musician, and teacher.
This concert has been a huge undertaking for us and we are very grateful to have the support of Ars Nova Workshop as well as the Painted Bride’s Big Ears Residency (in which Bart and Matt are participating) which is throwing an after-concert party at Plays and Players (1714 Delancey Street). We really hope that you can join us as we celebrate Jimmy Giuffre at the Philadelphia Art Alliance on Thursday, February 12th.
Thanks!
Bart Miltenberger (trumpet), Matt Davis (guitar), Michael Taylor (double bass)
"An unusual and striking trio" (Philadelphia Inquirer), The Chance Trio was born in the Spring of 2001 when trumpet player Bart Miltenberger, guitarist Matt Davis, and bassist Michael Taylor collaborated to play and develop their own original compositions. Since then the group has performed their quietly adventurous, passionate and humorous original compositions all over the Philadelphia area, including performances at the Kimmel Center, the Painted Bride, World Cafe Live, Tritone, and featured sets at the 3rd and 4th annual Collective Voices Festivals. Drawing influences from Jazz, Blues, Folk, Rock, and the Avant-Garde, The Chance Trio was a FEATURED PERFORMER AT THE 2006 FESTIVAL OF NEW TRUMPET MUSIC IN NYC!!!
