"Los discos se dividen en tres categorías. Los que, tras intentar los tres cuatro primeros cortes, destierras para siempre al estante de las basurillas. Los que consigues acabar, pero te dejan una sensación átona, insípida o simplemente poco interesante en las orejas, con lo que calculas que rara vez vuelvas a ponerlos, aunque pudiera darse el caso alguna vez quizá. Finalmente, están los que no tienes inconveniente en poner una y otra vez e incluso tus seres queridos pueden llegar a odiarte por ello. Este Play it again! de The Cherry Boppers pertenece claramente a esta última clase; y no sólo por su título.
¿Jazz funk en 2008? ¿Tocado por músicos blancos? ¿Y de Bilbao? ¿Sonando así de bien? Pues si, amigos. Puro jazz funk, música para bailar a cargo de uno de los combos más incendiarios del estado español en este joven siglo. Se instituían en el 2004 y dos años después se bautizaban con el disco Dressin’ the Puppet. Maceo Parker y James Brown les supervisaban desde la lejanía. Para el 2007 rubricaban con fuego instrumental el concurso Villa de Bilbao, que se llevaban de kalera. Incluso y todo telonearon a Sly & The Family Stone en el festival de jazz de San Sebastián de 2007, lo cual no es cualquier cosa.
Para y desde entonces militan en The Cherry Boppers Mihail Goldfingers en saxo y flauta, Txefo K-Billy percutiendo los parches y su socio, el bajista Lando Stone, dándole lustre a la sección rítmica; Xixo Yantani en las seis cuerdas e Ignatius Jhonny aplicando los diez dedos al Hammond leslieficado completan este pequeño regalo sonoro a reventar de soul auténtico.
Abre la batidora y vierte en ella rock, psicodelia, jazz, funk, rap, cine blaxpotation, melenas de rizo y la belleza a la vez elegante y macarra de un tiempo tan violento, como inocente: los 60 y 70. La dirección musical del grupo viene desde la colección Blue Break Beats, que recoge las mejores grabaciones de jazz funk y rare grooves del sello Blue Note, realizadas por artistas como Donald Byrd, Reuben Wilson, Grant Green, Lonnie Smith, Jimmy McGriff... Casi nada. Con una producción firmada por dos sabios veteranos, el Sex Museum Fernando Pardo y el exNegu Gorriak Kaki Arkarazo, The Cherry Boppers han montado un artefacto sonoro que, sin dudarlo una miaja, les convierte en una de las propuestas musicales que se nos escurre como arena entre los dedos."
ENGLISH: BIO BY SIMON HODGE, PRODUCER BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC, THE CRAIG CHARLES FUNK AND SOUL SHOW “Something had happened in the past few years in Spain and a whole rash of extraordinarily talented bands have appeared, The Sweet Vandals, Phat Fred and Casbah 73 to name just a few, but the ones that have recently excited me the most are this crowd from Bilbao.
Perhaps it is because they are a few hundred miles removed from the hub of Madrid that has allowed them to develop in a very different way, but the place they have reached is truly wonderful! Their first album was a reverential take on their musical heroes as they got into the groove of the 60s soul jazz greats such as Reuben Wilson and Grant Green, but with this album they have really spread their wings, it is full of original material and the confidence that his has brought has really allowed them to get fired up and let loose.
For me the whole album is a pleasure from start to finish but a few tunes are definitely worthy of note.
La Pulguita is nothing short of a full frontal assault. The theme is set up by Ignatius Johnny on Hammond and is deceptively simple but has that instantaneous hook that draws you straight in and before you know it they’re off into what they do best really taking the tune by the scuff of the neck and pummelling it into submission.
Blue De Los Colores is a real slow burner and brings to mind the boogaloo jams of Lou Donaldson and Dr. Lonnie Smith on Blue Note, or Rusty Bryant on Prestige Records. Like all the best slow jams it comes in waves gradually building to crescendos
Watermelon Man, this is the tune that really won me over to them when I first heard them. In a sense you can never lose with this Herbie Hancock classic as it has magic of its own that defies failure, the real challenge is to avoid an average interpretation. To say they have passed the test is an understatement,
And this is why I love this band so much, they have cut their chops listening to the masters and are now off on their own travels and they do it with such a zest for life”
