Hanging Coffins are a strange new pysch punk band from Eugene OR. Night-People got exposed to these dudes Chrome esque, creeped out, dark, druggy jams via there cassette on Madison's Jerkwave Tapes, and this new cassette is just as good, and maybe even weirder. This is a stark album not in its lack of fullness of instrumentation or composition but in its isolated downer feelings and mood, there are times when something brighter and slightly uplifting shines through the fog of the menacing psychedelic guitar grit, but for the most part this is damaged primordial alien rock and it rips. review - Eugene Oregon’s Hanging Coffins. The sound members Damon and Cade emit could probably best be described as No Wave in the Old West. You’ll hear parts resembling “Confusion is Sex” era Sonic Youth if it were coupled with Neil Young’s soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man. Full length cassette “The Black Plague in Mono No. 2” released on Jerkwave Tapes.

This slab of blown out garage rock was my first experience with Hanging Coffins. Both sides are packed with nice, thick bass lines, booming drums, distorted keyboard, and barely-audible vocals. Even though the recordings are incredibly low fidelity, the energy of trashy tracks like “Karkadann Thirst” and “Electric Antler” come through loud and clear. However, even with all of the raw punk enegry contained within, it’s the epic, dirge-like “Pablo’s Last Vision Quest” that cements this tape’s greatness.
