Ben Brucato's noise endeavors began as experimentation and recording projects in the mid-nineties.
In 1997, the first official release as Clew Of Theseus, "Memorial:006306" 7" (Interbang/Create A Villain Of Your Own), was released.
At the time, Brucato had little exposure to noise. Influences came from early industrial music and experimentation by metal and grind bands. In fact, his first noise records were acquired through trading copies of his first release.
Small, self-released copies of cassettes were all that bridged the gap from that release to the first releases on his label, Cathartic Process, in 2002. Releases like the splits with Black Sand Desert, Sewer Election, and 3"s like the "Clue of Thesis", "Home/Visitation" and others came quickly. 2003 saw the first full-length, "The Playground of the Damned," released in short run for the 2003 NorCal Noise Fest, and in 2005 the second, "No Will To Live," was released on Harsh Noise.
Clew has performed at the 2003 Oakland Noise Fest, the 2003 NorCal Noise Fest, the 2004 SF Harsh Noise Fest, the 2005 Phoenix Noise Fest and other big shows, and about a dozen, locally in Phoenix, through 2007.
Ten years after beginning recording, "Playground of the Damned" was reissued by Cipher Productions in Australia. And in 2008, Cathartic Process released "Vaults Vol. 1" on C-54, compiling the "Home/Visitation" 3" from Chondritic Sound, the tracks from his split with Sewer Election, the limited-to-10 3" available only at the Oakland Noise Fest and two tracks recorded for compilations that never came out. Also forthcoming in 2008 on Cathartic Process is a live CDr of tracks recorded in 2007, and "Vaults Vol. 2" containing what would have been the first full-length, "Nomohoni," that was canceled in 1999 and is being remixed and remastered for this cassette edition.
In early 2009, Clew Of Theseus released his first CD, "Meridian." This release was mastered by Stereophonic Mastering, best known in the noise scene for his work with Daniel Menche. "Meridian" shows the refining of the compositional vision in his work, and is the most focused and powerful recording he has produced to date.
In July, Clew Of Theseus' juggernaut album, the 100+ minute long, "Oran" will be released in 3 editions: the standard 2xC-50 edition, limited to 60 copies, and two box sets. One box set features a 44 page perfect bound photo book (limited to 25 copies), and the other adds an 8" picture disc lathe cut record (limited to only 15 copies).
The Summer of 2009 will see a number of excited Clew Of Theseus performances, beginning on July 18 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he plays alongside Aaron Dilloway, Robert Turman, SL Makita and others at the Embassy. August 13-16 he tours Southern California with Ryan Jencks (Deathroes, Sixes), Author & Punisher and Braden Diotte (ex-Tarantula Hawk). One performance will feature a collaboration with Jencks and another with Eric Wood of Bastard Noise. In September, Clew Of Theseus will be performing two shows in Arizona with Voice Of Eye and Jeph Jerman.
In the works are a collaborative release with Phillip B. Klingler (PBK) and a split LP with The Rita.
[The sound in the video below is very blown out and all the detail is lost in the sound - this was a very loud show. It was posted to YouTube by Geiger Retort, who captured this.]
As winter hibernation and spring awakening gives way to summer, Halo Manash rises radiant into luminosity, with wings spread into all worlds, and brings forth Taiwaskivi, an opulent work of solar ambience and primordial Ur-music.
Taiwaskivi, a work of sonic flame and aural ash, consists of seven interrelated tracks, utilizing such diverse instrumentation as organ, horns, vocals, drums, gongs, percussions and various string instruments as well as field-recordings captured during the pilgrimage that the creation of the work embodies.
An air of finality abounds, as Taiwaskivi, although a complete work in itself, can also be viewed as the third and final facet of a tripartite series of works that are part of one holistic creation – a treelogy, with seed, root, trunk and finally, branches. Being the culmination of an ascending journey through the aforementioned realms within and without, Taiwaskivi is the celestial crown at the peak, reaching toward Sol, source and beyond; it is the leaves and fruit of the branches and their skybound nectar ever-flowing - the sacred fire, the consummation and conjunction of All.
Comes in a hand finished cardboard booklet. Two different editions are available; regular CD edition and CD + DVD with inserts. Both are limited to 500 copies.
