About Climber
Bio of the Artist
Climber was started in 1998 as a good way to make a lot of beautiful, noise. Joey Renza had a whole mess of effects pedals and a loud amp that was feeling neglected. He got together with Julianne Butler and drummer Jason Wiggins and the three started to compose some noisy rock songs in the cramped confines of Jason's bedroom. They soon recruited Heather Dallape to sing and add even more guitar noise texture to the already deafening sound. They named their project Climber after Jason's son's dead pet hamster, killed by Jazz the dog.
The band quickly became one of the most compelling bands in Saint Louis, crafting jerky, punk rock songs full of weirdo guitar lines, haunting female harmonies and surf rhythms. Their live shows, which were often teetering on barely contained chaos, soon garnered a healthy following.
Theodore Moll eventually replaced Jason on drums and the band recorded their first self-released album "memento mori" at the legendary Atlas Studios in Chicago. A heavy amount of touring followed and the band was soon signed to Learning Curve Records . With a new batch of songs and access to recording gear, Theodore and Joey focused on making the next album more dynamic and textured, as well as poppier and more experimental. With such an ambitious task, recording demos took much longer, but the end result was well worth the effort. Once again the band trekked to Chicago to record. The EP "virginia heart attack" and the 7" "the sparkomatic sound" were released in 2001 to rave reviews and a wider audience.
In 2002 the band took a hiatus, as Joey became full time tour-manager for Face to Face, the Get Up Kids, and Reggie and Full Effect. Heather and Theodore were married and focused on their side-project BAGHEERA .
In 2005 the tubes in their amps started glowing again, indicating the time was ripe to start putting noise to tape. With half of an album almost finished, Joey and Theodore began refining the material and started a few new sonic experiments. Simply put, a new CLIMBER album is in the works.
