A small group of six Eureka teens responded to a homicide committed by a former Eureka High student in late February 2006 by identifying the need for a place that offered an alternative to drinking, using drugs, or spending time on the street. Assisted by the 4-H Youth in Governance training, the teens conducted a survey of 600 area high school students, held two community forums, and decided to launch The Coffee Opp.
COME HELP US MAKE THIS HAPPEN FOR HUMBOLDT YOUTH AND EMERGING ARTISTS!!! We need you to get involved . . .
The Coffee Opp is a DreamMaker program of The Ink People Center for the Arts, and is located inside The Ink People at 411 12th street. The Opp functions as an arts area for all ages, but primarily 15-20 year olds, and provides a safe drug/alcohol/prejudice/discrimination free area for them to utilize for creative projects, performances, and events. The space is open TUES thru SAT from 4pm to 8pm. Packaged food items are sold by workers, and there is free coffee provided (and snacks too when donated). We are trying to begin selling handcrafted items made by members and volunteers as well.
Duties will include:
• Run/host workshops for Coffee Opp youth.
• Create information booklets and flyers on the program, and promotional materials for events.
• Manage the concession stand and Opp space during open hours and events. Ensure space stays tidy, free of drug/alcohol usage, and free of discrimination.
• Keep record of activities and stats on persons using space through surveys.
Required Skills:
• Interested in art and business.
• Interest in creating positive community change.
• Honest and dependable!
• Ability to work with people from all types of backgrounds, creeds, ages, and personality types.
• Confident in leadership skills and ability.

The show will be up in the gallery for the remainder of the month but we will have a reception during February's Arts Alive on Saturday the 7th from 6pm to 9 pm.
Also, the Coffee Opp, located in the Ink People Building, will have art work rendered by talented local teen artists John Nordberg and Alex Reiger.
Come see what we have on the walls and enjoy Arts Alive with The Ink People and The Coffee Opp!
