Starting out in 1979, The Psychopaths and The Decibels preceaded The Convicted, They were infamous for their shambolic gigs around Essex, mostly ending in some riot or being forced to leave the stage. After they split and Gary Clarke gave up playing the remaining members Paul Eves(Vocals) Andi Schurer(Bass) and Peat Melling(Drums) recruited Guitarist/songwritter Mark Harvey and set about being a bit more serious about their music. The first gigs at Scamps in Southend and Crocs in Rayliegh( were the gig ended in a nasty riot between the band and the crowd) saw ex Machines(Also of the Shocks and Bushfire) Drummer John Dee vacate the drum stool.Peat re-joined after leaving Speedball ofshot band The Pinks and the band started giging around the south Essex area playing packed shows at The Grand Hotel, The Liberty Bell and The Cliffs Pavilion on New Years Day( a DVD is still avalible today)The band went into the studio in 1981 to record a four song demo with Bary Goodwyn from Speedball at the controls, Mark Harvey was a gifted songwritter and Convicted only recorded original numbers, Among them were Didnt make it, Revolution and Back on the streets, and Andi's songs were mainly the more Punky stuff like Blue Nights(Sulphate) Solitary(with Gary Clarke) and Daydream(words by Peat Melling)Big Abortion and G.B.H.More gigs followed throughout 81-82 with sax player Ian cox and his brother on 2nd Guitar.Andi was replaced by Stuart Douglas, brother of Eddie and the hot rods guitarist Graham. Andi went on to form Puppets Prey, and played in many Southend bands like The Steve Hooker Band, The Prey and Bif Bam Pow. the new line up released the Dog Rock EP with the tracks Runaway & Tomorrow which was played by John Peel a few times. By the end of 82 the band split and that seemed the end, until 2006 when they reformed for the Southend punk re-union shows that Andi had been putting on around Southend. They continue to gig and have recorded new versions of Runaway, Didnt make it and Action! Fun!( although without Mark Harvey) these recordings feature Dave Devile on the 2nd solo on Runaway, and Mr Flo on Drums. The gig with The Machines at Chinnerys 2007 saw The Convicted back on top of their game. The new songs will be released as a EP or an album with other Southend punk bands in Summer 2007.On April 22 2007 The Convicted re-recorded Runaway & Action! Fun! at Nightfly studios in Southend with Pete Melling back on drums. On this site there will also be info on other bands to do with The Convicted(Anorexic Dread, Three Mothers, The Prey & the Corpus Earthlings) sometimes tracks wll be uploaded to reflect this, and dates posted by these bands.
