| About The Couch Jumpers (rest in peace) |
We're NOT associated with Tom Cruise. He went nuts on Oprah Winfrey's couch AFTER we came up with our name.
[SK3 = Ska Is Love!]
The Couch Jumpers
April 26th, 2006 – May 17th, 2008
What a ride this has been, yeah? I didn’t exactly know what would come of making this band, but I was only dreaming that we could one day headline at The NorVa. When the band first started, I couldn’t hardly play walking basslines, Jason could only play a few beats, and Jeremiah was just learning how to upstroke cleanly. But we loved this ska music that almost nobody REALLY knew about. “Skay? Isn’t that punk with horns?” So the 3 of us chose to start writing our own songs instead of playing covers first, and then we got all sorts of various trombonists, trumpeters, saxophonists to try out for the band, and we finally settled on Josh and Elliott.
So why did we break up? Practices became more fun than shows, setting them up seemed to be a hassle, and a lot of venues and bands tried screwing us over. But to take the music in my head, put it on paper for a handful of different instruments to play, and to hear a good reaction from the crowd was really rewarding. When we got to the point of being able to write more intricate songs, the less enthused we were to continue setting up shows and playing them. We just wanted to have fun again.
The Couch Jumpers were thrown the ball and wanted to see how long we could run with it. We showed that we could play just as well as the bands that were almost twice as old as us. If I could go back in time to my 16-year old self, I would tell him without hesitation to start the band. All of us had a blast and we became better friends because of it. So I guess you were right, Aaron Barrett, but I had to find all of this out on my own.
Thanks for the fun times, everyone.
Sincerely,
Matthew Cheatham
