New band The Cross-Eyed Gals, based in Inverness, perform original songs as well as material culled from their wide spectrum of musical influences, including the Gals' love of Americana. They aim to portray landscapes and tales of lonesome prairies, bayou bust-ups, travelling men, love, loss and longing. The Cross-Eyed Gals comprise Swede Sofie Jonsson's sublime vocals and fiddle, the songwriting, vocal and accordion/piano talents of local Liza Mulholland, and honorary gal John Mitchell, from Easter Ross, offering a solid foundation on guitar and vocals.
About the songs on this page:
MISS YOU JOHNNY BOY is one of Liza's great songs.
Sofie wrote her GOSPEL SONG for a church performance.
CROSS-EYED GAL is a Gene Autry song that we learnt from Skip Gorman's wonderful album Lonesome Prairie Love.
The beautiful HANSEL AND GRETEL was written by Liza.
LIVIN' BY NUMBERS is another one of Liza's brilliant songs.
LOVER was written by our friend Kenny Brady.
MAKE ME A PALLET ON YOUR FLOOR is a traditional song with additional lyrics by one of our favourite musicians, Gillian Welch.
LEAVING LOUISIANA IN THE BROAD DAYLIGHT was written by Donivan Cowart and Rodney Crowell, and we learnt it from the lovely version by Emmylou Harris on her album Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town. The bass on this track is played by blues man Andy Gunn from Inverness, who also very kindly recorded all these songs for us.
