Birth: Jul. 25, 1944
Death: Oct. 21, 2007

Musician. He the bass player, singer and founding member of the 1960s pop trio The Cyrkle. The band was originally called the The Rhondells when Beatles manager Brian Epstein got them a contract with Columbia Records in 1966. John Lennon renamed them The Cyrkle and they were the opening act for the Beatles' 1966 USA tour. They were best known for their song "Red Rubber Ball", co-written by Paul Simon, which went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966. Their next single, "Turn Down Day", was also a top 20 hit and the group was featured in the film "The Minx" in 1967. After The Cyrkle broke up in 1968, Dawes wrote the commercial jingles "Plop-Plop-Fizz-Fizz, Oh What a Relief It Is" for Alka-Seltzer and "Coke Is It" for Coke-a-Cola. He also wrote the off-Broadway musical, "The Talk Of The Town". He died from complications of heart surgery. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)

Turn Down Day backed with Red Rubber Ball qualifies as one of the best two-sided singles of all time, right up there with Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane and Tyrone Davis' Can I Change My Mind and Turn Back the Hands of Time (really the same song, but what the hey)

You know, just because kids are into rap and such (not me) doesnt mean that they cant give oldies music a listen. They might be pleasantly surprised

Great music. Red rubber ball is an excellent song and coming from a 17 year old who enjoys listening to oldies music.

How many other bands were named by JL? That's reason alone to be a fan...the great pop music is the clincher, though. Cyrkle is a band too often overlooked.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the "add"! I've always loved your song "Red Rubber Ball" and it takes me back to the days I grew up on the East Coast, listening Dan Ingram and Cousin Brucie on WABC New York!
All the Best,
John
