How cool to have found you just now in the #1 spot in our (admittedly randomized) Top Friends!

It made me realize that I haven't visited in a while for a fix of The Dave Howard Singers.

So here I am.

The Night of the Living Ned 2

On Saturday June 16 come celebrate 50 years of Handsome Ned.

Handsome Ned Masyk (1957-87) was the Godfather of Toronto's Honky Tonk/Rockabilly/Cow-Punk scene in the 1980's.

Known for his strong tenor voice, songwriting chops, larger-than-life personality and tireless promotion, Ned established a residency at the Cameron House which attracted a mix of hayseeds, urban cowboys, rockabillies, drunks, punks, bikers, truckers and college students building a crossover audience for the scene. He also hosted the radio show "Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor" on CKLN 88.1fm where he played a mixture of vintage and modern as well as giving the first local airplay to the likes of Blue Rodeo, Lori Yates, Ray Condo, Bop Cats, Stray Cats, Rank & File, Blasters, & REM.

Ned did few recordings before his death in Dec. 1987, but a posthumous ‘best of’ was released in 1989 by Virgin Canada to rave reviews and it received a Juno nomination. In 2000, a double CD anthology, "The Name is Ned", was released by EMI to further acclaim and is now sold out of print.

To celebrate Ned's 50th birthday in June 2007, there will be a music tribute night at the Horseshoe Club in Toronto featuring performances by a cast of thousands including: Steve Koch, John Borra, Cleave Anderson, Johnny Macleod, Jim Masyk, Steve Leckie, Screamin' Sam, Greg Keelor, Bruce Good, Tony Kenny (of the Razorbacks), Teddy Fury, Lori Yates, Emily Weedon, Heather Morgan, Michael Brennon, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Scott B, Joanne Mackell & some surprise guests.

The night will also feature the re-release of "the Name is Ned" CD, as well as a preview of the upcoming Handsome Ned

The next time we go to the movies I was thinking we could launch concession straws from your blow-dart gun. Only in the event of an emergency of course. You know, in case we have to guard our provisions from a hungry mob, or zombies.

Keep Your Ears Peeled

Apr 10 2007 11:32 AM

The next "Keep your ears Peeled" night is happening this Thursday 12th April at a NEW VENUE:

ARIZONA BAR & GRILL
2A Jamestown Road
Camden Town, London
(Walk towards Camden Market from tube until you reach Jamestown Rd on left)

It could be our LAST night unless we impress the new venue with a good turnout (each night has been busy so far ...), so if you've been thinking about coming to one of our nights then this is the one to come to! Round up all your friends, and If you can't make it then tell someone who may be interested ... no pressure or anything :)

This month's night will be slightly different as we are sharing the venue with Tufnells Indie night, which means there will be a whopping 6 live bands for your listening pleasure!

Keep your ears Peeled DJs will be playing classic tracks from the John Peel Festive 50s of the 1980s between the live bands, and Tufnells DJs Trigs & Treaks will be playing a more varied mix after the live bands until 2am.

Check out these quality acts:

Mr Solo (from Dave Devant & His Spirit Wife)
The Supernovas
Jean
Cavalry
Keshco
