   About The Dave Sterner Quintet

In 2003, David Sterner formed the Dave Sterner Quintet, consisting of an alto and tenor saxophone and a traditional piano, bass, and drum rhythm section. The group performs in a wide range of musical styles, including the blues, swing, funk, and Latin jazz. Heavily influenced by 1960s soul composers, the quintet covers charts by a range of artists, including Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, as well as, such contemporary composers as Joshua Redman, Bob Berg, and Michael Brecker. In 2006, the Dave Sterner Quintet released the self-produced CD What’s What, which includes eight original pieces and reinterpretations of four classics. The Quintet has also been honored as the Cleveland FREE TIMES 2007 music award "Best Jazz Band".

" This CD is representative of a really quality young talent taking his music to another level as an improviser, band leader and composer. Dave Sterner has produced a formidable 1st recording which presents music of distinction and promise. Dave and his band speak to an audience young and hip, but a foundation drawn from a deep well of tradition gives the music a substance that takes it beyond the trendy. This is a young saxophonist on the rise." Ernie Krivda- Koch Jazz Artist

" Yes…I think I am going to like this one. Rich melodies, smooth tight ensemble work and fine all around playing....whether Sterner and company meant it, or even knew it, the music of the two above-mentioned great alto saxophonists…Phil Woods and the late Cannonball Adderley…it permeates the whole set. And that, my friends, is a good thing."

Enjoyed your tunes and grooves. As for my stuff, I kind of like the flexibility of a quartet with guitar. You can treat the guitar like another horn or chordal instrument. Ever since I heard Sonny Rollins "The Bridge" I was hooked. My newest CD does have keys on it as well though.

All the best
