Øystein Furevik's 'the Dead Birds' project, is at first glance an intense layering of long thematic guitar melodies mixed with emotional, somber, and yet painfully honest words.
With Øystein Furevik being the sole creator of every layer of instrument that you hear from this band, and then adding his own unique, and very effecting lyrics and vocals on top of them, the Dead Birds music seems to have somewhat of a religious effect. Vocals coming to you like a dark prayer, music like a spiritual journey, the full semblance a ghostly epiphany.
However you choose to look at it, this beautiful, sad, dark and sometimes angry music will take you adrift upon its compelling chords, but be prepared for a sudden forceful movement into your soul.
These are songs that will stick with you, and if you are weak of heart, there may be tears to follow, as what we have here isn't 'light hearted' by any means.
There is a very strong emotional and yet majestic tone to this music, one that will easily have one drifting into it's story and carrying you through sometimes what almost feels like scenes of nature. One may be made very aware of the earth we are all home to, with lyrics like "...I will remain in the soil..."
Sitting through the music's rise and fall, sometimes like a dream, sometimes so visual in sound as to be like a backdrop for a movie or painful remembrance, it is hard not to be moved. Those that listen, should be prepared. You're about to go on a journey here, one that's very real, raw, and though very aware of this world..
..unworldly.
